Book Description

The "Divina Commedia" (Divine Comedy) is an epic poem written by Dante Alighieri between 1304 and his death in 1321. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature, and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative and allegorical vision of the Christian afterlife is a culmination of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church. It helped establish the Tuscan dialect in which it is written as the Italian standard. It is divided into three parts, the Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.
On the surface the poem is understood to be fictional and describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven; but at a deeper level it represents allegorically the soul's journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially the teachings of Thomas Aquinas.

5.0 out of 5 stars The "Divine Comedy" read in the original Italian June 30, 2007
By MT
Format:Audio CD
This a great CD, with all of Dante's Divine Comedy, read very expressively by the actor Claudio Carini. All files are in mp3 format. Its a great way to become familiar with this work in the original italian. A free copy of the text can be downloaded from various sites on the internet. I bought the CD in Italy. Greatly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars Usabile, anche se non perfetto. January 23, 2010
By sagredo
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Per me, lettore ingenuo, e`comunque perfettamente leggibile. Da consigliare, anche se non perfetto.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine indeed. November 30, 2008
By Cundrie
Format:Audio CD
[[ASIN:8889352094 La Divina Commedia di Dante Alighieri (Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy Unabridged Audiobook Read in Italian)]
This is a remarkably lovely recording, all on one CD. Claudio Carini's mellifluous and poetic voice carries the listener through the whole fascinating story in the most beautiful way (I found myself unwilling to be interrupted). You do not have to be fluent in Italian to benefit. Someone with very patchy Italian, but with a wish to know Dante in the original, I listen using a parallel text. There will no doubt be excellent versions in America, but if you are in England, I recommend the text and commentaries by John D Sinclair as the translations are so good. Even a very little patience soon has the listener understanding more and more of the original. And what you do not understand is still music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good bargain for complete text in Italian June 29, 2010
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good bargain for a simple, no frills edition of the Italian text. It's possible to navigate to individual canti, but there are no line numbers. Also, line-wraps are a bit awkward when font size is set on anything larger than the smallest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent scholarly edition October 22, 2008

This edition of the Italian text includes detailed commentary by the editors, along with charts and diagrams, glossary, and other helpful materials. Bound into the center are a number of color plates of early copies of the masterpiece. An excellent resource!

5.0 out of 5 stars CD MP3 not CD Audio November 26, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Be aware that, unlike the other CDs in this group (Petrarch, etc.), this CD contains MP3 files (!) and MAY NOT PLAY on some CD players! (Message = "Data Disc"). However, it can be converted using the read/write drive of a computer and the application "Roxio Creator", in which case one MP3 CD expands to a number of Audio CDs.
