La Llave De Mi Corazon finds tropical music troubadour Juan Luis Guerra returning to the secular sounds that have made him an enduring, endearing performer. His last disc, 2004's Para Ti, was a cautiously received--if still joyous--collection of spiritual tunes. La Llave De Mi Corazon centers on romance and love, themes that better suit Guerra's blend of salsa, merengue and other assorted tropical rhythms. The cutesy title track is featured in English and in Spanish, though it's doubtful Guerra will engage in any serious crossover work anytime soon. Better is "Something Good," a silky, simmering duet with smoky-voiced Chiara Civello. Guerra's own rich, expressive delivery is always a treat. He's emotive without oversinging, particularly during the lilting "A La Vera" and "Solo Tengo Ojos Para Ti." Standout "Si Tu No Bailas Conmigo" is a simple, gorgeous ode to amor that soars on glittering imagery and a gently shuffling beat. "If you don't dance with me, I prefer not to dance," Guerra confesses to a lover. It's an irresistible invitation. --Joey Guerra

Customer Reviews

I am hoping that his other CDs are as good as this one, though I highly recommend getting this album.

I just love it, the english songs and new jazz rithems are a great complement to the other merengue, salsa and bachata songs.

Juan Luis Guerra no dejó nada atrás.

"Medicine for my soul" abre las puertas.

Juan Luis Guerra is steadily earning recognition as a major artist who transcends the meringue and salsa music he plays so well and creates universally beautiful and joyful music for a world audience. This collection of his love songs is a great introduction to his work. These are artfully written songs with profound lyrics, and you can dance to most of them. What else can you say? For one thing,he writes about deep, spiritual love, not just sex, and he doesn't seem to have a sour note or mean bone in his body. For English speakers, this is also a good way to improve your Spanish and learn some colorful Dominican terms for birds, voodo charms, herbs, tropical trees and other lovely things.

4 1/2*

Good Latin albums are getting harder and harder to find these days - the glory days of salsa and merengue(the 90s and early 00's) are over, and even great artists like Olga Tanon and Manney Manuel are having a hard time coming up with good material.

Some exceptions include Milly Quezada and Gilberto Santa Rosa, and it is great to see Juan Luis Guerra doing the same.

Guerra is one of the greatest Latin musicians working today: he writes, arranges and sings all his songs. His past work is legendary, and are among the greatest ever written, even if I personally have to endure the political angle of some of his lyrics.

Recently Mr. Guerra took a very unfortunate turn towards "Christian merengue" which I found objectionable and of lower musical quality moreover.

Mercifully, this new album is just love songs, free of politics and religion (as far as I can tell - I am not a fluent Spanish speaker) - and it is a real winner. While it may not quite have the unique rustic charm of his greatest work, it is, on the hand, more modern and accessible, his technical singing abilities have matured magnificently, plus the recording quality of this CD is a big improvement over his earlier ones.

The first half of the album includes an infectious mambo, an abolutely magnificent bachata, Qaue Me Des Tu Carino, and the kind of high spirited salsa and merengue we associate with this artist. It is similar to his old work, but different.

The second half of the album is perhaps a bit less impressive. The best here is an intriguing mellow salsa Cancioncita De Amor, and a ballad Sabia Manera in which Guerra sings more beautifully than I have ever heard him.
