5.0 out of 5 stars Best boot I have EVER owned, August 8, 2011
This review is from: La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot (Apparel)
I have owned 3 pairs of Maks (4 if you consider the pair in the box in the closet).
I work construction and wear these as work boots. My first pair lasted 4 years, wearing them virtually everyday. Sometimes 12-14 hours a day, 6-7 days a week. My second pair lasted 4 years BEFORE I resoled them.
As to the reviewer who complained that they felt like they had a steel shank in them...THEY DO! And who takes a pair of boots like these, and submerges them, and then tries to walk them out. These boots aren't like work boots. These are very tough, stiff boots. They are designed for mountaineering. Backpacking with heavy loads and crampons. They will take whatever you throw at them.
See a professional boot specialist. Get the proper fitting boot. Wear proper socks. Get proper insoles IF needed.
Like I said, I work construction, and wear these almost everyday. Under the MOST EXTREME conditions. I have have hiked and backpacked some of the tallest mountains in Colorado and Montana. I weigh 235#, with a pack I'll top 300#. These boots are MORE than up to it.
After 11 years of wearing Maks, my feet are used to them. I even travel with them on. Walking from one end of an airport to the other, and the same at the connecting airport, and then all over town. My feet in gym shoes would be screaming at the end of the day. Not in Maks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Boot I Have Ever Used, August 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot (Apparel)
My first pair of Maks were purchased for me by a fellow co-worker that insisted there was no other boot like it. I climb high voltage towers at work and walk in these boots all day, my endurance increased because of their comfort and because they are light my agility noticeably increased. The supporting shank made of a non conductive firm fiber allows me to kneel and rest my weight on my heels comfortably and is sufficient for use with my climbing hooks on wooden poles. I dont know if La Sportiva is aware of the fact that numerous lineman use this boot.

1.0 out of 5 stars heel busters, July 7, 2011
This review is from: La Sportiva Makalu Mountaineering Boot (Apparel)
I would NEVER buy these again! Chewed my heels up something awful! Felt like walking on a steel shank. After submerging for 12 hours and contorting them, miles of break-in hikes, and countless "doctorings" of heels, there is no adjusment to these clod hoppers. Don't let the soft inside upper fool ya! These things are merciless. Better off to spend more money on other boots, rather than trying to find a deal from these! But don't take my word for it.
