Jordi Savall is a fearless performer who is fascinated with facilitating musical dialogues between Eastern and Western traditions. --Npr

Product Description

The Sublime Porte (Sublime Gate) was the name of the open court of the sultan, led by the Grand Vizier. It got its name from the gate to the headquarters of the Grand Vizier in Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, where the sultan held the greeting ceremony for foreign ambassadors. It was an ancient Ottoman practice to make the gates of cities and kings palaces places of assembly. Later the name came to refer to the Empire s position as gateway between Europe and Asia. Following the success of the album Istanbul, Jordi Savall crosses new boundaries between Orient and Occident. This time, the vocal traditions of the Ottoman Empire, Armenia and the Jewish Diaspora are brilliantly resuscitated. Instrumental interludes enable us to enjoy this journey through time and space. In addition to Hespèrion XXI, this album features the elite of Turkish traditional musicians under the inspired direction of Maestro Savall.

5.0 out of 5 stars El meu més sentit condol i lamenta compartida! January 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Montserrat Figueras García was born in March 1942, in Barcelona, Catalonia. I had no idea, until her tragic death of cancer in November of 2011, that she was just a few months younger than I am. She always seemed sensuously youthful, both in person and through her voice. I can't imagine not being able to hear ever new experiments and expansions of the concept of Early Music from her. The world is poorer.

In 1974 Figueras and her husband Jordi Savall formed Hespèrion XX, which quickly became on the the world's most popular early music ensembles. Jordi Savall rocketed to stardom after the release of the film Tous Les Matins Du Monde, a depiction of the French Baroque composer and viol da gamba virtupso Marin Marais. It was Savall's exquisite gamba playing in the soundtrack of that film which introduced most of "our" generation to that instrument. Figueras and Savall 'modernized' their ensemble as Hespèrion XXI, but they also diversified the repertoire enormously, creatively, fearlessly. Montserrat had always been deeply attracted to Sephardic and - for want of a better term - Hispano-Muslim music, for which her voice was superbly suited. She, Jordi, and their daughter Arianna recorded together in more recent years, including "modern" compositions and improvisations based on Early Music sensibilities and structures.

This recording will certainly push the expectations of long-time Hesperion XX fans. It's not more of the same; it's really Turkish. The performers include some of the most skilled performers of traditional Turkish music in combination with European-trained musicians. But it's also something other than 'modern' Turkish popular or traditional music. Luckily there are samples, so that you can decide for yourself whether you have a taste for exotic musical time travel.

Requiescat in pace, dilectissime vox.

A wonderful recording that has the ability to transport the listener. This is noteworthy music that compliments the atmosphere created by Burton's translation of 1001 [Arabian] nights.
