I recieved this oil last week and it is rancid. It smells and tastes like rotten tomatos or avacados and there is no way I could eat this on any type of salad. Both cans arrived in perfect condition and neither are near the expiration date on the bottle. I recommend purchasing from a local retailer so it can be taken back if its rancid. Its too much of a gamble buying from Amazon when you cannot return food items. Lesson learned.

UPDATE 04/05/2011: After reading so many reviews about how good this product was I contacted La Tourangelle through their email system and told them about the situation and asked how this avocado oil was supposed to taste. I wasn't sure if it was supposed to taste the way it did or not. I didn't ask for replacements or anything because I know a lot of companies will not back their product if sold by Amazon. That is not the case with La Tourangelle. I was contacted by Diane through email about a week later asking for the batch numbers. I gave them and didn't hear anything back, until today. About an hour ago UPS delivered a box that contained two large cans of oil; one can of Avocado oil and one can of Hazelnut oil. I was so surprised because I didn't even remember giving them my address, but now recall it was required on their email submission form. At any rate La Tourangelle went above and beyond and they will be getting my business in the future, but only in a B&M store or through their website. That is the only place I can recommend anyone buy these products because Amazon will not take back food items.

As far as the oil, the new Avocado oil tastes like real Avocados with no rancid taste or smell and the Hazelnut is out of this world. I plan to try them all out now, from the La Tourangelle website. Companies that go above and beyond will always get my business because they actually care about their product. Thank you La Tourangelle!

This avocado oil has a great taste. I use it for frying foods in the skillet and I also make a great avocado oil vinaigrette dressing. I'm really glad I found this, since I dislike the taste of olive oil.

This is too expensive for me to cook with - but Oh, how good it is on salads!
It's difficult to find in the local stores/chains - so I've asked my supermarket
to get some.
Will be giving it proudly as gifts to other salad lovers.

I bought Avocado Oil specifically for two reasons: one, because it is very similar to olive oil in texture and smell, yet brings a new flavor component to my cooking--and second, to use on my lunchtime spinach salads as an improved way to do oil and vinegar dressing. Avocado Oil, in refined form, has a smoke point higher than Canola oil, grapeseed oil and safflower oil--somewhere around. I've also read that it's just as healthy. I initially ordered this thinking it was the high smoke point (520F), refined version, but La Tourangelle, being the "gourmet" company they are, offers this product only in unrefined form, so that's probably around 350-375F, which is still pretty high, and great for sautee applications where you use medium-high heat. That's my most frequent cooking technique, so it's perfect for me. La Tourangelle's Avocado Oil, one of three brands I've tried, tastes great! Fresh, slightly green (in a good way) and subtly aromatic.

Avocado oil is not well known and it's not common in most kitchens, but I have found that the flavor, which is only moderately strong, will work with a wide variety of foods, but I don't think it's a good choice for any kind of dark meat. I most often use this for sauteeing vegetables, fish and poultry, and I also use it under lower heat for things like pasta (again, only if the pasta doesn't have dark meat), and it's a perfect combination with vinegar when you choose to dress your salads in a basic oil & vinegar.

Though I don't always cook with it (I still use olive oil for certain things, including most of my pasta dishes), I love having avocado oil close at hand for those times when I consider it a superior choice. It actually won't replace your olive oil though, because it has a somewhat different flavor, but it is a flavor I love.

I just received my order, believing that this product was suitable for high heat. However, it is clearly stated on the label that this product is "Suitable for medium-high heat. Perfect for sauteing, baking, dipping, blending into a dressing/sauce, or drizzling on a finished dish." There is a picture of a thermometer on the label which goes all the way to "high." The label is marked "Medium-high" for this product. This means that La Tourangelle Avocado Oil has a smoke point of roughly 350 degrees. This is barely better than olive oil, which has a smoke point around 325 degrees.

If you are looking for avocado oil that is appropriate for high heat, you need fully refined olive oil, which has a smoke point of around 520 degrees. However, fully refined avocado oil is less flavorful. La Tourangelle is not fully refined and, as a result, retains certain qualities that enhance its flavor and make it better for sauteing, baking, dipping, blending into a dressing/sauce, or drizzling on a finished dish.

This oil is very functional for numerous uses. A very light clean flavor that fits in with almost anything you cook. High smoke point makes it fantastic for pan cooking or stir fry. It is a little too pricey to use as a complete cooking oil replacement but definitely an improvement when used in the right spots.
