I found this drive to be a good value considering that the lightscribe technology is included. I had a quick and trouble-free install and was burning dvds effortlessly and very quickly too, including dual layer discs. The burn speed is comparable to my external Toshiba 16X drive attached to my notebook.
The lightscribe burning is a little slow (about 27 minutes on my system) but you simply start it and can walk away without needing to monitor it. The images look great (monochromatic, but finely detailed) and are dependent on the quality of the source.
An overall good value, the drive simply does what it is designed to do.

I installed into an external firewire (IEE3994) housing. My IMAC SE G3 400mhz runs it perfectly despite the manufacture's G4 500mhz requirement.

Using this unit to replace an OEM DVD that went bad in my HP desktop. This installation went in flawlessly and worked first time out of the box. I would definitely purchase another LaCie product based upon this experience. Have another Lacie external drive that takes some abuse and never fails. So far, a good company.

This product works great. Average burn time for a DVD is FAST! The Lightscribe feature is slow (20-25 minutes for the full disc/ 3 minutes for a couple lines of 13pt font) and the picture quality is dull. That being said, I would still buy this product again. LaCie makes an excellent product with excellent software - as far as the Mac is concerned anyway. It is so great to not have to deal with CD Labels anymore. It is so much better we have been going through our burn collection and replacing them with the Lightscribe versions. Blanks seem expensive, but not when you include the hassle of labeling and printing labels that has been removed.

Works fine. Cool but slow lightscribe burning (I guess all lightscribe burning labels are slow). Otherwise normal burning/backups are fast.

Of course, now the new thing is Blueray burning.
