I bought it in May and have used it every day since then. This is an excellent product. It does play .avi files fine. It hasn't run into power supply issues. Use your computer to connect it to the USB to move your video files into the the movie folder (or music or pictures). Use your remote control to play back on your TV, it has standard RCA (composite yellow/red/white) or HDMI playback. It is fool proof.

This is our first experience with a multimedia hard drive. This one purchase is a shining example why we should never forego researching products before we commit our hard earned money, especially on consumer electronics. Nevertheless, we went with LaCie because we thought it was the industry's leader. Unfortunately, our experience wasn't nearly as good as we expected. In our opinion this is an inferior product and does not carry the quality one would expect. I loaded this baby up with 245 "avi" formmated movies, hooked it up to my 50" Plasma and was ready for some quality entertainment. For the first month it was heaven but then here comes "Murphy". Everything that could go wrong did.....when we tried to change to another movie the device would lock up; it freezes during playback of of movies; it gets really, really hot, and the remote does not have a FF or RWD feature. The best thing about the LaCie Classic 1TB is the packaging and I was still within the window to return products directly to Amazon.com period. Don't buy this product!!!

I was so excited to get my first movie station, since I had been waiting for the 1TB to come out. The sales rep told me it was one of the best on the market. I must disagree. It is a very simple unit, and very easy to load music and pictures, but the movies are a problem. After spending many hours loading movies onto the drive, I came to find out that it seemed to default to different languages during playback, and it was confusing to get the correct VTS files loaded. Then I figured I would just rip out the foreign languages and only stream the langauge I wanted. Oddly enough, I loaded only English and it gave me Spanish playback. No idea how that could have happened, so I tried a different movie. This time it copied the correct language and I was set to watch my first movie. The movie started and I was just getting into it when it suddenly just kept freezing up on me. I patiently turned the unit off and proceeded to let it load again, and the same thing again. I checked the original movie and it was working fine.

The audio syncronization was nothing to write home about either. Most of the movies and videos were not synched. So, before deciding to give this thing back and get a different unit from a different manufacturer, I contacted the support Web site. Three weeks later, with no answer from the support staff, I turned it back over to the dealer for a full refund and purchased a unit that works perfect.

In short, a lot of money for a lot of headaches. Forget this item and shop wisely.

I've bought this external hard drive six months ago and would like to thank LaCie for it. It's exactly what I was looking for: great quality, user-friendly, quiet, stylish, and yet unobtrusive. It's quite small and lightweight for its vast capacity. The setup is nearly effortless: it's plug & play and offers customizable formatting. Buy this product if you want a great deal on quality storage!

The LaCinema Classic will not play movies recorded in .avi. The box advertises that it plays .avi and so does the advertisement. This was the reason for buying the product.

Not at all satisfied with the product quality.As I bought two of the same thinking since of its brand name reputation.
I'm constantly facing challanges during play back as its power adapter
stop power supply after every 10-12 minute.So if you want to play some thing you have to turn off the whole power supply and turn it on again and again every 10 minutes and so on.Its disgusting.
Same challenge with other unit as well,so I am really very much disappointed with this prouct and amazon for recomnding such substandard product to its customer.As I'm in India at this moment I cannot return this as well.
