LaCie PetiteKey USB 2.0

LaCie PetiteKey USB 2.0
Small on the Surface, Big on the Inside

With the LaCie PetiteKey, compact design meets solid data protection and capacity. The key-shaped design is back – now even more functional and memorable than ever before. Best of all, the PetiteKey's 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB models allow you to fit an enormous amount of data in a small flash drive.

LaCie PetiteKey USB 2.0
Solid Construction

When it comes to accidental data loss with external drives, one of the biggest killers is water damage. Splashes, spills, and deep dives into puddles can mean the end for many thumb drives – but not the mighty PetiteKey. The PetiteKey is resistant to splashes and spills – but most impressive, its 100-meter waterproof design means you'll never have to worry about accidentally leaving your keys in your pants on laundry day. Also, its connector is scratch-resistant, meaning you'll never have to worry about your keys damaging the thumb drive while they're sliding around in your pocket.

LaCie PetiteKey USB 2.0
Software Secure

The LaCie PetiteKey comes with LaCie Private-Public software, which helps to keep your data safe with AES 256-bit encryption and password protection. Create a password-protected area on your thumb drive and store all of your confidential information for maximum security.

Secure Cloud Storage
LaCie PetiteKey USB 2.0

LaCie makes it easy to integrate secure cloud storage from Wuala into the PetiteKey, making storing and sharing your files, photos, or videos easier than ever. You get a year of one-to-one storage ratio with Wuala (your 16GB PetiteKey will come with 16GB of Wuala Secure Cloud Storage, for example), allowing you to back up your key's contents or double your storage capacity. Even access your files on the go with the Wuala Mobile App.

Latest version of Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8/ Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 (Mac Intel only for LaCie Private-Public software)

Looking to minimize my key ring bulk in pocket, I opted for this PetiteKey as a replacement for an old Sandisk Cruzer Titanium. In the first few days of ownership at least, I'm impressed, but will update this review with more long-term information.

The physical size is very small in comparison to other "normal" flash drives and even to most keys (see my customer image). It's also as thick and as light as a key, so nothing weighing you down. It feels solid enough - though I wouldn't try running it over with my car or anything. And even though it claims to be waterproof, I'm not about to test it intentionally. :-) No cap to loose - the connector is recessed below some metal. It moves freely around my standard key ring without trouble. I'll say it "blends well" with the other keys due to the shape.

Usable capacity after being formatted with NTFS is: 30,988,759,040 bytes (28.8 GBs)

Tested read/write speeds out of CrystalDiskMark 3.0.2 x64 are 20.0 MB/sec and 5.6 MB/sec respectively (see my customer image). I confirmed the same numbers independently by copying a 4 GB file to and from the flash drive. About 85 minutes to fill it to capacity and 24 minutes to read it all back. They are respectable, but definitely won't win any awards. Still, remember that the use-case for this drive is portability first and foremost. It'll work fine for occasional backups and transfers, but less so with SpeedBoost or bootable OS images. The drive is a USB 2.0 model which is more than adequate considering the peak speed.

I haven't had the durability/bending problems mentioned by Robert S. Perhaps it was an issue that was fixed in the last 8 months, and they are making them more durable now. Or at least it is a manufacturing problem that is inconsistent.

Overall, it's a great product and no complaints (yet).

There are many reasons you might want to carry a flash drive on your person. The more you use public computers (and the more privacy minded you are), the more reasons there are. If you're a student or business worker, carrying files on your person can be a huge improvement over waiting for a cloud service to sync. It also affords you the ability to take portable programs (of which there are many incredibly versatile ones) around with you. To some extent, it lets you replicate a "home computer" feeling when you're out and about. That said, this is ultimately a flash drive, so here we go.

PROS
+ Size. As far as a flash drive goes, it's on the smaller size, and very thin. The half-connector used here means that the PetiteKey need not have the "fuller" thickness associated with a standard flash drive, and it's diminutive size makes it easy to carry on a keyring. Similarly, its weight is marginal, and you won't notice it at all in your pocket.
+ Keyring form factor. Slip it on your keyring (or a BladeKey Bolt, in my case), and you've got a flash drive you'll always have with you and (hopefully) never lose. That opens up a number of possibilities for how you use a flash drive.
+ Good capacity and speed. It's nothing to get worked up about, but the PetiteKey is perfectly serviceable for data transfers and media. But as with all USB 2.0 flash drives, don't expect to find high-bandwidth transfers to be a joy.

CONS
- Metal flaps protecting the USB contacts can dig into things under the drive. That can be an issue if you're using something like a BladeKey, as they may "catch" the key under them.
- Exposed contacts. Never had an issue with this, but I am certain it will shorten the lifetime of this flash drive a bit.

I've owned the original for a couple of years and never had a problem. There have been some reports of failure but your mileage will obviously vary. Being on a key ring, I would imagine these get knocked up more than usual.

This key drive is almost 1/3 smaller than the original and is easily smaller than any conventional key on your key ring. The texture of the metal is also different from the original, which was smooth metal prone to scratches. The petite key has a nice sanded or rough metal texture that seems like it would be more durable than the original.

My only wish was that it was USB3 however, i haven't had any issues with this as it's still pretty speedy USB 2.

Sometimes when I plug it in to a mac os x machine it does not always appear. I need to wiggle it around or switch slots for it to show up. It does not feel very secure and seems to not have a snug fit in a usb slot. When the first one would not work I could not return or exchange it and had to wait for the repair department to replace it after 2weeks. Fortunately I had more reliable keys. It looks nice though.

It does its job as a USB drive. It's fast enough to play music and movies from but...here's the skinny. I know it's a USB 2.0 but it is slow as a dog when transferring data to it. The thin design of the connector is a little flawed, I bent one of the pins in the USB socket on my PC when inserting it. The inside edge of the plug caught the pin on the way in and folded it rather easily. Just another thing I have fix/upgrade on my system I guess. I modified the key by scraping the inside lead edge of the key's USB plug with a razor to a 45* angle, being careful not to damage the gold contacts imbedded in it, to help avoid catching another pin which seems to have done the trick. I don't however, like having to be concerned about future connections on other machines but as long as I pay attention to how it's inserted, there shouldn't be any more issues like that. I like the size and it seems to be constructed well. It fits nicely on my keyring and the documentation says it's water proof which is nice to protect it from the moisture in your pocket (I'm not planning on swimming with it).
