I've had this product for almost 4 months now (so I can't comment on long-term durability) BUT so far this has been a great external hard drive. It's fast and easy setup and is *definitely* durable. I've already chucked it down stairs, mashed it around in my luggage, and toted it on week-long hikes where it had many chances to get beaten around. Not a single problem so far! I bought this product specifically because my work causes me to travel all over the globe (and ALL my electronics get beaten up, it's inevitable!) and this one is living up to its "rugged" reputation. In fact, I like it so much my best friend also bought this for his work and he's loved it too.
I've only experienced one minor issue in all the times I've used it: after plugging in the product my computer gave a pop-up notification that I had maxed out the power on my USB hub. Easily solved, once I followed directions and reset the USB it worked immediately. The external hard drive also comes with a power adapter to avoid this problem (that uses a second USB port). So far it's only happened about 3 or 4 times. Even with the minor glitch I'm giving it 5 stars. Update: 2.5 years later, this is still going strong. Granted, portable hard drives are a dime-a-dozen now, so I imagine the company has updated with a larger size hard drive. However, I've beaten this hard drive up for 2+ years through six major household moves in 4 different countries ... it has dings and dents as medals of honor but has never not worked. As for the USB port getting maxed out, that, I believe, was attributable to my old laptop (Dell, 6 years old, also took a licking and kept on ticking). After the first few times of receiving the pop-up notification I used the second power cord in another USB port without problem. When I purchased a newer laptop 1+ years ago I never received an error and only used the standard cable. Five stars!!

The LaCie 80GB Rugged All-Terrain External Hard Drive is great for what it does. The set-up was easy, and I had no problems with backing up my data. The software that comes with the HD doesn't quite have enough features for my liking. When you back-up your data, it copies everything you want backed-up, even if it hasn't changed. What would have been nice is a feature that backs-up data that is newly added/changed. If you have a lot of data (photos, mp3s, etc.) each back-up can take a while.
