I bought one of these a few years ago and have loved it. It was fast and never had any problems at all. I purchased it after reading a review that tested multiple drives to see which one survived abuse and this one came out at the top. After extensive testing until all other drives died the LaCie Rugged continued to work. The comment they gave was that they did everything but run it over with a truck. Unfortunately, we DID run it over with a truck and left it out in the rain all night. I was hysterical until I plugged it in and tried to mount it. I was stunned when it did mount and was able to transfer everything over to my laptop! I'll never buy any other brand of Hard Drive.

I have been owning some rugged drives already for the past years and have never been disappointed. I use them at work to exchange large files between PCs and Macs and the Rugged Triple USB3.0 is the best version so far as it is the fastest on Mac with FireWire 800 and fastest on PCs with USB 3.0. It is more than 3 times faster on PC thanks to the SuperSpeed USB 3.0. The product is great and secure with the rubber sleeve and anti shock design.

I've used an earlier model LaCie rugged drive and like it quite a bit. Before that, I'd gone through three or four external hard-drives, all of which had serious problems. For example, they drew more power than standard USB ports could deliver, they were fragile or they would inexplicably stop working. LaCie's drive worked great from the instant I plugged it in, and it's been through some pretty rough handling.

But since I last purchased a LaCie product, they've been infected by the bizarre impulse to supply a suite of programs designed to help you manage backups, journal your files and allow some limits to sharing when using "sneakernet". Fair enough. Two major problems. The installation program is highly cryptic and secretive about its intention to load these programs on your computer and the programs are just awful.

How awful? Think pre-iPod mp3 player management software, or some of the more intrusive anti-malware code that your less sophisticated friends buy and which turns out to be harder to remove than the most persistent virus. The "Genie" backup solution helpfully rebuilt my desktop after blowing it away, only now, post-Genie, I can't right-click icons, I can't see my taskbar and I can't open new explorer windows. If you're going to feature a piece of software that's designed for mass use by unsophisticated users why go cheap? All it's going to do is make people very very angry at you.

I've managed to undo the worst of the depredations visited on my system by LaCie's aggressive and buggy software. My drive is still oddly partitioned into two 500 gb NTFS partions (why? the manual and the installer are silent) but otherwise it seems to be working just fine.

So if this drive looks like a good deal, be sure to factor in the cost of four hours of your time spent undoing the blitzkrieg assault on your system that LaCie seems hell-bent on deploying.

All drives will crash one day, and the competition to make them bigger and cheaper has probably had an impact on quality. With that in mind:

We ship or carry large video files all over the place, and have probably 10 of these 320- and 500GB "rugged" drives. Only one has ever failed--someone tossed it in a backpack and then--who knows? But it had a big dent in the case.... We also have a huge pile of the 2Big LaCie drives, too many to count. One Enterprise class drive failed to mount out of the box (so we no longer pay double for those, just buy the regular ones); one can no longer be written to (some corruption issue); and one lost data when someone hot-swapped a RAID 0-striped drive at the wrong time. But we also have one that has been running nearly 24/7 for 3 or 4 years without a hiccup. Compared with other hard drives, and we've tried most all, LaCie is the most dependable.

I've owned this drive for about a year and I like it; I just bought a second one. I have the 1TB, 5400 RPM version; there are also two 500GB versions of this "Rugged Triple" with the dual FW800 ports and single USB3 port; one of these 500GB versions runs at 7200 RPM (as Lacie's literature and website point out) so (caveat) be careful to select the version you want; IMO it's too easy to make a mistake. Data-transfer on my 5400 RPM drive is about as expected - around 60GB/sec restoring from a disk image on my internal drive to the Rugged external. I was also able to try using the drive's USB 3.0 port on my recent Macbook Pro and found that the data transfer rate maxed out at around 80GB/sec. I'll eventually try the drive's USB 3.0 port with another Mac's ExpressCard34/USB3 adapter - it would be nice to see even faster data-transfer speeds but I'm satisfied with the status quo. :)

I used OS X's "Disk Utility" to partition the drive into 3 partitions - one for booting up, one for backing-up (using Time Machine) and one spare - for miscellaneous files and folders. So I did not encounter any of the problems with LaCie's software mentioned by other reviewers. I can't comment on LaCie's Support Desk because I haven't needed to use it.

One other caveat: the MSRP was $229.99 for the 1TB when I bought my latest one. I've noticed a few higher asking prices.
