This drive seems like a good idea.

There are almost no thunderbolt drives on the market, yet Apple thinks this is the 'best' connection method for external devices.

I have a MacBook that has Thunderbolt and USB 2.0, so this drive sounded like it would be a perfect fit.

After I received the drive, I partitioned it so I could use 1/2 for backup, and 1/2 to share files between MAC and Windows.

After 4 months, and burning my fingers on the Thunderbolt Cable, the thunderbolt controller blew up, and corrupted the FAT32 partition so it was no longer recognizable on PC or Mac.

I contacted LaCie Support, and after 2 WEEKS of asking for support, they finally responded. Unfortunately for me, I have to send the drive back at my expense, and then wait an additional 2 weeks for LaCie to either repair or replace my drive.

I'm terribly disappointed in this expensive product that performed terribly, caused me issues, including attempting to get support for a 4 month old drive.

No one likes getting burned, physically or financially. There aren't many products out there, but you may want to consider another brand that has a USB-Thundebolt adapter for it's modular drives.

Another Update.

Today is 7/9. Finally received a contact from 'Silver' support. They suggested that I troubleshoot my broken drive myself, in an email, to determine where the problem is. Remember the ticket was opened on 6/19, I've already done as much troubleshooting as I can with my broken, corrupted drive, and I am still 2-3 weeks out from a fixed drive.

I did take my MBP to the Apple store, and determined that the Thunderbolt Controller on the MBP is in tact and functional.

INITIAL REVIEW: Why did they even add a thunderbolt port? Because the thunderbolt port does nothing besides heat up to a temperature capable of burning skin. Just received this brand new as a Christmas present to pair with my mac mini 10.7.4 16gB DDR3 I5, and I was able to install drivers only via USB 3.0. I figured once the drivers were installed, it would work via thunderbolt....wrong. Thunderbolt connection is not recognized whatsoever. The worst part about it is that on Lacie's support page, they have windows drivers for thunderbolt, and mac drivers for USB 3.0. Shouldn't that be the other way around since thunderbolt, at the moment is primarily a mac based transfer platform to compete with USB 3, which is primarily a Windows based platform?

IMPORTANT UPDATE 3/30/13. After my frustrations with Lacie regarding the first Thunderbolt drive I received being problematic....their customer service has blew my mind by sending me a replacement hard drive. Not only did they replace the hard drive, but they upgraded it to the 1TB model. I was overjoyed...and it gets better....I plugged the new drive in via thunderbolt to my Mac Mini, powered the computer on...and there you have it...Setup and formatting took 5 minutes, the hard drive is running a time machine back up at the moment, and I am a happy customer. There will always be issues with quality control in the world of mass production, so when a company can stand up, take fault, and fix the situation, it really restores ones faith in that company. I will be Lacie customer for life. Thanks Lacie

Drive works great. Easy to setup and can copy files from my Mac super quick via the Thunderbolt cable. The drive itself is not to big or heavy. Feels like it might actually withstand drop because of the thick rubber shell. Matches well with your Mac too (if that matters to you).

Unfortunately, the Thunderbolt cable failed on the first day. Upon first plugging in with provided 3rd party Thunderbolt cable, was able to get drive formatted and setup with ease. 45 min later, unable to detect the drive on my Mac. Tried the USB cable and drive showed up immediately. Went to the Apple Store and bought a cable there ($29 for the .5m, not exactly cheap). Now drive works is working again on my Mac.

Essentially had to add $30 to the cost of using the product due to faulty Thunderbolt cable. That sucks, but lots of 3rd party proprietary Apple cables are unreliable. Drive is great though! No complaints there.

I bought this with a new mac book pro. Initially the drive worked for the start up and the initial format. After that the thunderbolt was not working so I switched to the USB 3.0 option with worked fine until I needed to transfer a large amount (500G) and the drive would stop transfer about half way through. I reformatted the disk to journaled- mac from fat 32 and the same problem persisted in that when I connected the thunderbolt cable the drive was not recognized and the usb 3.0 was and the transfer was interrupted around 200g. I returned the drive for a western digital 2T usb 3.0 (cheaper by $50) and so far more reliable.

The setup/installer didn't work right off the bat. Had to go online to find out how to work around that. Found the 'partition' instructions -- that didn't work. Then found 'erase' instructions if the partition option didn't work. After 4 or 5 reboots, I finally got it erased, and tried to do a backup. Within 5 seconds, got another error and the backup ceased. Then I tried to delete the very few files that had copied, and I got another error, AND it wouldn't let me delete the existing files. Said 'that is enough' and I returned it.
