Bought this to record multitrack audio over Thunderbolt from a Mac Mini. The mini's internal 5400 rpm drive is a little slow for recording multiple WAV files at once (especially if any other system duties require disk access at the time), so I added this drive. There is an amazing amount of overhead on this thing -- its LED shows only minimal activity while writing 24 tracks of 48KHz sound files in real time. Transferring files to other machines via USB 3.0 is also terrifically fast. With no power supply needed it makes the unit ultimately convenient to move between workstations. It's also silent, so it's a perfect device to use in audio recording situations. NOTE: the product description I saw on Amazon did not indicate that there was a Thunderbolt cable included with the drive. When I got the shipment, I discovered that there was, indeed, a Thunderbolt cable in the box, and I didn't need to buy the $30 Apple cable that I had added to my purchase.

I had been using the LaCie with two Macs. The Thunderbolt port stopped working with both Macs. Neither of the Macs has a USB 3.0 port, so I'm stuck as far as the Macs are concerned. When I plug the Thunderbolt cable into either Mac, the light on the drive flashes continuously at a very high rate, but neither Mac detects the drive.

When you set up the LaCie, you can define two partitions, a Share partition formatted for both Mac and PC and a partition formatted for Mac only. Neither of the partitions will now register through the Thunderbolt port. Both will register through the USB 2.0 ports on the Macs. Oddly, on one of the Macs, even the USB 2.0 port is crippled; I've not been able to salvage a single file from the LaCie with that Mac. Files that were copied were corrupted. Currently only the folders are visible and not the files. Fortunately, USB 2.0 works on the other Mac, and I've been able to salvage the files. Both of the Macs are recent models running Mountain Lion. There were no software updates made to the Macs that could have triggered the problem.

I did not make this purchase on Amazon. I bought it new and in its unopened original packaging on eBay. I haven't determined how LaCie will treat me on this. Was the LaCie I purchased on eBaY only sold there because it was known to be defective? It's unlikely, but not impossible. I'm telling you the whole story.

One thing I noticed was that when it was working, the drive stayed very warm when plugged into a computer via the Thunderbolt port, even when idle and even after it had been ejected on the Mac. I've read similar comments from other users, so that's not just my unit. As you'd expect, it sped up the drain on my MacBook Air.

Very fast ssd. Very fast USB. Sometimes it is faster than the computer hard drive itself. A little pricy, though.

I have a 2014 27" iMac whose speed with the internal traditional drive just wasn't cutting it. After a fair amount of reading online, I decided to try this via the Thunderbolt port as my boot drive and the drive on which I store all my software as well as my Dropbox folder. (Photo and music library and all other storage is now the old internal drive.) The result has been like buying a new computer. Boot time is under 30 seconds, and Creative Cloud apps load in the blink of an eye. I did make the effort to do a completely clean install of Yosemite and all my apps. I had suspected for a while that old hidden files of preferences and other stuff from previous versions of software may have been taking its toll on speed. Total time to get everything installed and configured was probably 3 hours, and I feel like I've already made up that time in day-to-day speed just in the few weeks I've had it.

I am a mobile DJ and I use this drive to back up my entire collection. Being SSD it is super FAST. Price is great and with USB 3.0 you can't beat the speed (unless of course you have Thunderbolt).

Fast and silent.
Been using it for over a year via thunderbolt.
Only issue is from the OS X side keeping trim enabled.
Have to reenable trim after every software update.
