LaCie RuggedKey USB 3.0

LaCie RuggedKey USB 3.0
Rugged for Everyday Disasters

Life's an adventure – and disaster can strike at any turn. With the RuggedKey, the last thing you need to worry about is your data. Heat and cold resistance protect your data in the most extreme of climates, whether you're trekking across a scorching desert or braving the frozen tundra. Furthermore, it's IP-54 certified for resistance to damage from dust and water projection. The RuggedKey is the most portable storage in the LaCie Rugged family yet, and the best on-the-go protection for the real world.

LaCie RuggedKey USB 3.0
Sky-high Drop Resistance

The LaCie RuggedKey is built to withstand accidental drops from heights far above what you'd encounter on your way to the office. Its rubber construction is 100m drop-resistant. That means ultimate protection for your key – and your data – for all of life's little stumbles.

Full-throttle Transfer Speeds
LaCie RuggedKey USB 3.0

Bigger files need better speed. With the RuggedKey's USB 3.0 interface, you get speeds up to 150MB/s for daringly fast file transfers. USB 3.0 represents an enormous speed increase from USB 2.0, and best of all, since it's backward compatible with USB 2.0, there's never any worry about connectivity.

Secure Cloud Storage
LaCie RuggedKey USB 3.0

LaCie makes it easy to integrate secure cloud storage from Wuala into the RuggedKey, making storing and sharing your files, photos, or videos easier than ever. You get a year of one-to-one storage ratio with Wuala (your 16GB RuggedKey will come with 16GB of Wuala Secure Cloud Storage, for example), allowing you to back up your key's contents or double your storage capacity. Even access your files on the go with the Wuala Mobile App.

LaCie RuggedKey USB 3.0
Software Secure

Hardware rugged, and software secure – the RuggedKey key protects your data from the inside with AES 256-bit encryption. Easily create a password-protected area on the key to securely store all of your confidential information. Ultra-secure AES 256-bit encryption technology means the RuggedKey is secure from the inside out.

Customer Reviews

After a couple of weeks of use, the drive stopped working.

I have again contacted LaCie and I am waiting to here back, as their Customer Service department is rather slow.

If somehow the sleeve could be attached to the keyring, I'd give this product 5 stars.

I purchased this directly from Amazon and it died in less than two months. I would not mount in either a mc or PC, and was recognized as a "LaCie NAND Flash Device" in windows by the device manager. I returned it to LaCie, who sent me a refurbished one, and it failed in under an hour of use. It is not recognized by either a PC or mac at all. I have again contacted LaCie and I am waiting to here back, as their Customer Service department is rather slow. It appears as though there is some serious QA/QC issues with respect to the RuggedKey drive series. A quick Google search will return many people having the same issues. I would avoid the RuggedKey series drives until LaCie can figure out what is wrong.

I purchased mine from Amazon in March of 2013 and loved it. It worked great and was extremely speedy. I was always worried about losing the orange sleeve, and made sure to search for it if it ever fell off.

Well, to my dismay, last week it seemed to have fallen in the street while I was on my way in from the street, and when I realized it was gone the next morning, I searched with no luck.

I e-mailed LaCie thinking they would sell me an additional sleeve, and was told by a customer service rep that they are not sold separately. He told me that there was no way I could get another one.

Considering I liked having this on my keychain, in my pocket at all times, I know that it will be rendered useless within a week.

In turn, if you have a choice, buy either the XtremKey line if you must choose LaCie, or go with the Corsair line of USB 3.0 drives. Both of these other options have screw on cases which will not just slip off at some point.

If somehow the sleeve could be attached to the keyring, I'd give this product 5 stars. Unfortunately, its design flaw renders it useless for its designed purposes as soon as you lose the sleeve.

Just my $.02.

The RuggedKey comes supplied in plastic tamper-proof packaging. While this makes sense for display in stores, it makes for a frustrating start. I found the packaging difficult to open, and the environmental friendliness of this type of packaging is questionable. LaCie could do well by using a small thick cardboard box (which I believe they have done in the past for other products).

With the packaging out of the way, we can get a good look at the RuggedKey. I love this design of this product, it looks modern and captures attention on any desk. The circuit board for the USB key is encased in metal and feels very sturdy. The key slides into a thick rubber case, which acts as the rugged protection for the key. Because of how chunky the rubber is, this key has a much `stronger' feel to it than other rugged USB keys.

The rubber case does its job well, as this key can be dropped from 100 metres, and even exposed to extreme temperatures and liquids. The only flaw I could find with the design is the shape of the key - its a P shape, which means it takes up two USB slots, or blocks the Thunderbolt port, if used on a 15.4″ MacBook Pro. On an iMac, Mac Pro, or a MacBook that has USB slots next to the MagSafe connector, this isn't a problem.

The key itself has a brushed metal finish which is very smooth and looks great, although fingermarks do show up easily on it. Otherwise, it looks stunning and compared to most USB keys it looks infinitely more stylish. Its rubber construction is 100m drop-resistant. LaCie has also stated: "Additionally, we drop tested the LaCie RuggedKey from 100 meters onto concrete and it survived."

In this price range, the performance of this drive is good.

I really loved this usb key, all metal, it looked very sturdy. Sadly it died on me on at a critical time (I am an IT guy, and my usb key is my toolbox).
The USB key is now recognized as a "LaCie NAND device" and there is no partition on it, and it is impossible to create one. it is now "brain dead".
too bad for the price

It's chunky, thanks to the LaCie-orange-waffle protective sleeve, but that just seemed evidence of how well protected my data would be. After two weeks, the sleeve was lost in transit (which surprised me some, because I figured it would be lost when the key was in use, since there's no good place to put the roll-around sleeve when you have it off), but the key continued to work well. I mostly just kept it plugged into my USB hub. Three nights ago it still worked fine and, if I'd thought of it, I'd have thought it still a worthwhile purchase -- all that storage room, enough so that I could move all my "working" documents and some other files to make room on my solid-state HD. Yesterday morning, neither of my Macs could even register that it was there, except in the System Information report, where it showed up as usual - but nowhere else. Several (paid) recovery software attempts to resurrect/retrieve the files proved pointless. Summary: if you need reliable data deletion for your most sensitive documents -- and are willing to pay $75 for up to 32GB of it -- buy the LaCie RuggedKey. After a month's use, your data will be wholly inaccessible.
