From the Manufacturer
Built for the Extremes
Introducing the next generation in industrial-strength storage – the LaCie XtremKey USB 3.0. If you want to push the limits of speed, capacity, and security for your data, the LaCie XtremKey was built with you in mind. It features transfer speeds up to 230MB/s*, capacity up to 64GB, and the ability to withstand crushing pressures, oceanic depths, and extreme temperatures. The LaCie XtremKey is about as hardcore as external storage gets.
* For optimal performance, the key must be connected to a USB 3.0 host port. Calculations are based on average read time. Transfer rates vary slightly from one key to another.
We've put it to the test, and the XtremKey USB 3.0 is LaCie's strongest, toughest USB key yet. Its ZAMAC metal alloy construction withstands severe shock, relentless pressure, dizzying drops, and temperatures as bone chilling as -30°C (-22°F) and as scorching as 200°C (392°F). It features heat, cold, drop, shock, and pressure resistance to protect your data from the outside elements, plus AES 256-bit software encryption to secure it from the inside.
** Determined with 10-ton vehicle drive test.
The LaCie XtremKey is IP-68 Level 8 certified, making it watertight up to 200 meters (656 feet). The memory modules are shielded inside a 2mm casing and sealed with wear-resistant screw threads and a hermetic, rubber O-ring. So if your LaCie XtremKey plunges overboard while scuba diving – grab your gear and dive in after it. Your data will stay dry and secure inside.
Extremely large files need extreme speed. With the LaCie XtremKey's USB 3.0 interface, you get speeds up to 230MB/s for extraordinarily fast file transfers that allow you to transfer three HD movies or 9,200 photos in less than one minute. USB 3.0 represents an enormous speed increase from USB 2.0, and best of all, it's backward compatible with USB 2.0. Never worry about connectivity.
*** Calculations are based on approximately 4GB HD videos and 2MB JPEG photos. These values may vary depending on your configuration.

Just before I sent it back, I noticed the USB plug did not fit snugly into the socket. Squeezing the plug with my fingers reshaped it sufficiently to achieve a snug fit and, for the first time, USB 3.0 speed. Write speed is a soild 129 MB/sec.
I have to say, for an indestructible drive, this LaCie has a very soft metal plug that is easily bent out of shape. This happens, for example, if you plug it into a MacBook Pro and rest the laptop on a flat surface. The drive's fat head causes forces on the USB plug which deform it and eventually cause the performance to degrade until at some point there are I/O errors.
1. Drive is not "flimsy" in the device case. Solid tight fit.
2. Thumbdrive portion unscrews and separates from the key chain portion. Meaning the "cap" is key chained to my key ring, and the drive itself comes out. This is important because the base of the drive is very fat, basically because of the design..... so you cannot leave the laptop on a table and plug this in because it is too fat. With that in mind it would be really bad to have this drive on your lap with a bunch of keys hanging from it. That would wear out your USB port. This design prevents that so it is much better.
3. All metal. Very solid. Other devices in this class have a lot of plastic material. Very solid and well built.
4. Very fast. This drive is at least 3x faster than similar, also USB 3.0, model.
My only complaint is the bottom is so "fat" when unscrewed that you cannot use this with a laptop sitting on a table. This can be solved with a short USB extender cable, and is not a big enough problem to take away a star. The design is to be "tough" which is why it is this way and cannot be avoided. Only thing I could think of is maybe the "Fat" end being detachable in some fashion. Still no reason to take away a star.
I would suggest anyone looking for a fast solid thumb drive to keep their data safe, this is the device you need.
The new key is fine, working as expected. The delivery was timely and the device functioned quite well. However i was not happy with Lacie who promised security and free cloud storage. Unfortunately Lacie must have thought that everyone who knows their devices works within development for they never included any intelligent instructions on how to encrypt the device or set up the cloud storage. Everything was quesswork for the device. Very disappointing behavior by the manufacturer.
