Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Combining four DVD formats in one device, this all-in-one rewritable drive provides Hi-Speed USB 2.0 and FireWire ports for easy connection to any PC or Mac, making it the most versatile drive available. Sporting LaCieÕs original aluminum d2 Design, it can be integrated into standard 19Ó computer and audio equipment racks or stand alone on a desktop. This powerful drive features innovative LightScribe labeling technology, which burns custom, silkscreen-quality, precise images directly onto your discs using the very same laser that burns data.

Revolutionary LightScribe Disc Labeling
LightScribe is an innovative new technology that allows you to burn silkscreen-quality labels directly onto CDs and DVDs with a laser instead of a printer. LightScribe uses a combination of your CD or DVD drive, specially coated discs, and enhanced discburning software to produce precise, professional labels. The result is an impressive iridescent image composed of art, text, or photos of your own creation.

Record Custom DVDs In Minutes
Offering the fastest DVD record speed on the market in a slim, aluminum design, the LaCie d2 DVD Drive features 16x record speed. Record professional-quality, personalized DVDs with the included Roxio DVD Builder authoring software. Import video and audio footage from your DV camcorder and burn projects onto DVD or CD-Video discs. Completed DVDs can then be played back on virtually any DVD player.

DVD±RW In One Drive
This universal drive delivers four DVD formats in a single, slim device. By combining DVD+RW and DVDRW formats, the LaCie d2 DVD±RW Drive delivers greater creative versatility by eliminating the need to choose one format over another. This combination drive is also capable of writing to CD and DVD formats, which are compatible with nearly all existing DVD-Video players.

Compile MP3s, Photos, Video
Back up valuable data, share photos, and archive MP3 libraries and MPEG-2 DVD video. With the ability to store digital data on CD or DVD media, the LaCie d2 DVD Drive allows you to burn up to 8.5GB or more than two hours of theater-quality video on large-capacity DVD general use discs. This all-in one rewritable drive also features FireWire and Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports for easy connection to any Mac or PC, making it the most versatile drive available.

4.0 out of 5 stars Something for both platforms, May 30, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: LaCie d2 DVD±RW with LightScribe 16x (Personal Computers)
There is no denying Lacie makes a great set of products - nice brushed alumanum casing, drives that sense when the computer turns on and off - and its compatible with both Mac and PC. I happen to use both.

Burning CDs is a cinch (I have yet to do a DVD) and the Lightscribe program gives you a good basic set of tools to create labels for your CD. People with greater needs for graphic and type control will probably want to import their CD labels into the Lightscribe program rather than rely on the basic presets and type controls controls that went out of style ten years ago. So far though, I'm satisfied - and the lightscribe program is only version 1.0 so there's going to be an upgrade sooner or later.

The reason that this didn't get 5 stars is because the software came on a DVD. Here I am with two computers, both of them with a CD-ROM drive, and they couldn't fit 123 MB of programs on one CD. By e-mail they suggested I put the disk in the drive, and it would be automatically recognised. Wrong. Luckily, I have access to a DVD drive on another computer, and I burned a CD-ROM image of the offending DVD. Loaded the software in that way and got the thing working.

It's a shame that software and hardware vendors assume everyone has the latest and greatest gadgets humming at their desks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lightscribe or Double Layer DVD, but not both, May 27, 2005

If you want to burn a double layer DVD with a Lightscribe label you're going to have to wait until they make the media for it. Right now, as far as I can discover, you can either get Lightscribe-able CDs or 4.7 GB DVDs from Verbatim, but they don't make double layer DVDs that are also Lightscribe-able. So don't be disappointed, like I am, when you discover you can't use both really cool features on the same disc.

3.0 out of 5 stars This product needs improvement, October 23, 2005
This review is from: LaCie d2 DVD±RW with LightScribe 16x (Personal Computers)
This is a nice idea, but the light scribe takes 20-25 minutes to work which is way to long. The dvds are very expensive with light scribe, It looks quite dim on DVDs, it is not quite professional looking yet. This product needs improvement.
