Gr 3-5-Fifth-graders Trudie Marks (aka Lab Coat Girl) and Ben Bonekowski are back in another adventure. In past books, Trudie discovered that Ben has the ability to become what he eats. This time she is hoping that when he drinks a 7UP float, he will become airborne. The experiment works all too well, but then two of their friends arrive on the scene before Ben can dilute his floating abilities. Their attempt to keep the experiment a secret is misconstrued as a romance, and they endure much teasing. Ben tries some experimenting on his own with disastrous results, such as when he eats seven miniature candy bars and became a "mini-me." At one point he is nude and forced to wear toilet tissue, then doll clothes. This is a lightweight story with soccer games, pseudoscience experiments, and ridiculous situations that will appeal to young readers' funny bones. There is sustained suspense and humor, though the characters themselves are fairly two-dimensional. If the budget is tight, stick to Seymour Simon's "Einstein Anderson Science Detective" series (Morrow) or Marthe Jocelyn's The Invisible Harry (Dutton, 1998).-Elaine Lesh Morgan, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR
