The man and his music.,
By
This review is from: Labi Siffre (Audio CD)
Well it seems a shame to pigeon hole someone by saying he is openly gay, when, what does that really matter if his music is brilliant. I know he has sometimes been very radical about his beliefs and lifestyle, but when I was growing up if you played one of Labi's songs to a girl you were at least guaranteed that the girl would look at you in a more positive light! By that I mean I found that the girl usually thought there was a more sensitive and caring side to you than if you were a love 'em and leave 'em type.......even if you were!
Thirty something years later his songs sound as light and lively as they did back then. "Too late" is a masterpiece of a song on relationships in my opinion. "Send me a picture of the way that you look" it starts off with and midway through resorts to "I'll keep it in my pocket till I know I'm going to sneeze"! I mean come on! What a put down. Okay that's the tough one or one of them but "Crying, Laughing, Loving, Lying" which is not on this selection is one of the most beautiful of love songs. "Crying never did nobody no good no how". These are words that you can live your life by. I would just suggest you give him a listen and you'll realize why old fellas like me still listen regularly to his beautiful gentle lyrics and guitar.
