What a wonderfully fresh talent, November 30, 2005

With a voice that's part Blossom Dearie, and part Lisa Ekdahl, yet totally her own, Angelyna is a refreshing newcomer to the jazz vocal scene. Her performances on well-known tunes are fresh and exciting. One only need hear the opening track, "Straighten Up and Fly Right," to be immediately hooked. Yet, this stellar opener is only the beginning of a wonderful musical journey this disc has to offer. The high points are "Pure Imagination" and especially "What a Wonderful World." The only disappointing track is "Miss Celie's Blues" -- only in that it's seemingly been overdone by other vocalists of late -- Ms. Martinez imbues this with the same sincerity that's found on each track.
Do yourself a treat and buy this disc -- proof positive that independent artists are truly the heartbeat of musical releases. An astounding debut, that anticipates great things still to come.
