5.0 out of 5 stars Childbirth class convenience.....Wonderful!
As a first time mom that works fulltime, I was so excited to see that a childbirthclass was finally on video. My time is so limited, with commuting, I didnt know how I was going to be able to attend classes once a week on the hospitals schedule. My husband loved the idea of taking it at home, at our pace and we learned so much. Sherry is a wonderful teacher that let us...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad - except for the Tylenol problem.
I found this video to be very helpful and full of useful information. My hubby and I are both in the medical field and really only wanted a refresher course, not the whole 4-6 week class, and this fit the bill. The info we felt we didn't need to hear again just got fast-forwarded through.

That said, there are a few problems. It is definately low-tech, and could really...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource., June 3, 2000

Murphey's Law strikes again: as luck would have it, my job kept me away for all but two of the childbirth classes my wife and I enrolled in locally. Luckily, I learned about this video soon after starting the classes. While Ms. Tunney isn't polished in the Hollywood sense, she is quite an effective instructor, and presents the class in a concise, yet relaxed manner. Due to the wonders of editing, and Sherry's teaching skills, my wife and I actually found this video to be a better resource than the classes given in our community. If we had it to do over again, we both agree that we would skip all of the local classes, except the one dealing with hospital orientation, and focus our attention on the video. I highly recommend this tape; it's done much to help me deal with the "new dad jitters." (Still, if my wife-- normally one of the kindest humans I've ever known--looks at me and shouts "You did this to me! " while in the delivery room, I'll be begging the doctor to give ME the drugs.)

I found this video to be very helpful and full of useful information. My hubby and I are both in the medical field and really only wanted a refresher course, not the whole 4-6 week class, and this fit the bill. The info we felt we didn't need to hear again just got fast-forwarded through.

That said, there are a few problems. It is definately low-tech, and could really use some perked up graphics or something. It kind of reminded me of the video you watch at work because you missed attending the mandatory inservice in person. Long, not terribly exciting, but lots of information.

My biggest problem, though, is that the instructor states SEVERAL times that, "I want you on 2 Extra-Strength Tylenol every 4 hours after the delivery". This point is made something like 3 times. The problem? Extra-Strength Tylenol has 500mg per tablet, and you're taking 1000mg at a shot. If you take this dose every 4 hours as stated, you are taking 6000mg a day. The max dosing for Tylenol is 4000mg a day. Meaning that if you take her advise, you are exceeding that max dose by 2000mg each day.

Would the instructor have known that? Probably not. Why? Because she's a Certified Childbirth Educator, not an RN, not an MD. (Practicing medicine without a license??)I was rather taken aback that this suggestion even made it on the video - it should have been edited out. I hope that in future editions of this video that part will get zapped. While otherwise a decent video, she is giving inaccurate and potentially harmful information out to every person that views this tape.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent substitute for a birthing class, March 19, 2001
This review is from: Labor of Love Childbirth Class [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I'm expecting my second child and just watched this video again. It is very very imformative and prepares you in all aspects of delivery and labor. My husband and I felt too busy and too impatient to sit through the classes. This video is a perfect substitute.

The instructor's voice and grammar are very annoying, but the content is complete and valuable. I have replayed parts of this video a few times, and turned it on when I went in labor with my first, to confirm that I was reading the signs correctly.

If you can't or don't want to take a class, buy this tape instead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Informative and Convenient, March 9, 2000

As a second time parent, I found this video complete and informative. The information was presented in a humorous and entertaining manor. With my first pregnancy I attended a class at the hospital, it nearly put me to sleep. Sherry was fantastic and I enjoyed her wit, she made learning a joy. I learned so much more from her class then I did the one I took at the hospital. As a teacher myself, I can say, she is one of the best teachers I have observed teach almost any subject. I would highly recommend this video, even if you have already taken a class. If not this one is all you need. We loved being able to take this class at home. With both of us working, we found if difficult to find time to attend a class or find a baby sitter for our two year old. This was perfect, THANK YOU Sherry.

We watched the video tapes and they have helped us very much. This is our first baby and we are stationed in Tokyo. Childbirth classes are not easily available especially in english. The tape was very lively and enjoyable, interesting and fun to watch. We feel very prepared even though we are not home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased in Chicago, January 23, 2001

This review is from: Labor of Love Childbirth Class [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My husband and I really enjoyed this informative vidio. Be prepared for low quality recording, and no footage of actual labor and delivery, but a lot of information. Sherry covered indepth, topics from pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery . She does not advocate Lamaze techniques or Bradley Method techniques, but does teach relaxation positions and massage, breathing techniques, and delivery and pushing positions. I'm really glad we got this video. We feel more prepared for the big day. Great if your not planning on taking any birthing classes, or a perfect supplement.

1.0 out of 5 stars As a last resort only...., April 17, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Labor of Love Childbirth Class [VHS] (VHS Tape)
We bought this tape instead of attending classes and were very disappointed with it. Not only was the picture and sound quality poor, but the instructor was very annoying. The only good point about this video was that it explained basic info if you knew absolutely nothing about how the birth process progresses, as well as pain management. It did not, however, explain in any type of detail the breathing exercises and when to do them, which is why we bought the video! There was only a brief discussion about massage and the very quick instruction on basic breathing techniques. I was not able to use them at all during the birth of my daughter for simple lack of not knowing them! We were not happy with this video and would not recommend it to anyone.

2.0 out of 5 stars Barely worth it, August 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Labor of Love Childbirth Class [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought this tape in lieu of attending a childbirth class. I felt that it did educate me regarding what to expect during labor and birth. However, the tape was extremely poor quality (both video and audio)and the instructor was irritating at best! They kept referring to a "workbook" which was not included in my mailing, and often there were charts and pictures shown to the class that were not visible to me. The instructor's style was very bossy and arrogant, and it was tiring to watch due to the poor camera work. I can't say I regret buying the tape because it provided me with necessary information and ideas; however, I think it should be a better quality tape for the amount they charge.

3.0 out of 5 stars Better Than Nothing!, February 16, 2000

This review is from: Labor of Love Childbirth Class [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought this video because my husband wasn't able to attend a class with me. We watched it and found it to be very informative. At times the video was hard to understand, due to technical positioning of the camera and the audio was a bit muffled in places. But the overal effect was like being in a class from the comfort of your home. Sherry kind of has a "nasal-tone" voice and is kind of sarcastic to the guys, so that was a little unnerving, but I think she did a good job covering the most important parts of childbirth. This video is a lot cheaper than a class, and more convenient so you can review things if needed. I ended up not watching all of it before my first child was born, because it was so realistic, it made me nervous!
