Book Description

March 1997
An inspiring and empowering celebration

Sharing the extraordinary joys of giving birth, nineteen women bring you their own true stories. Honest and reassuring, their voices offer comfort and support, as well as warmth, humor, and a wealth of practical advice for mothers-to-be.

Meet Ann, who reveals how it felt to give birth underwater; and Miriam, who looks back on a beautiful birth—even after 52 hours in labor. Rosemary, a first-time mother, recounts the natural childbirth of her twins, while Susan relives the birth of her fourth child. In this touching and candid collection, every common type of birth is covered, along with important questions to ask of your practitioner, the people at your delivery site, and yourself, so that you, too, can have a satisfying birth, no matter what method you choose.

"An exquisitely balanced view of the various scenarios that occur in childbirth. Women would benefit greatly by using this as a primer for pregnancy preparation and planning." — Pat Burkhart, Associate Professor and Coordinator Nurse-Midwifery Program, New York University Clinical Director, Elizabeth Seton Childbearing Center

"This is a great book to read both before and after having a baby. Reading these stories is like finding a soul mate." —Bonnie Rote, RN Childbirth Educator and Director of Aerobics and Fitness Association of America's Prenatal and Postnatal Exercise Educational Programs

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Too often Birth Stories are tales of horror, fear, or disappointment. In this refreshing and reassuring book, nineteen women share with us the other side: positive, joyful birth stories that include water births, C-Sections, VBACs, long labors, painful labors, short labors, and births with and without drugs. Zimmer tells these birth stories in clean, strong prose, and her closing chapters on taking control of your own birth experience will be helpful--and inspirational--to pregnant women or to those planning pregnancy.

From the Publisher

Nineteen mothers share their joyful birth experiences, demonstrating that childbirth can be a fulfilling experience in spite of the pain. An antidote to childbirth horror stories, this collection of real stories empowers women to trust themselves and take control of their bodies and the process of giving birth. Inspired by the author's own positive experience, it includes questions expectant mothers should ask themselves, their doctors and the delivery site. The stories cover natural childbirth, using painkillers, C-sections, VBACs and birth over 40.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful and thoroughly readable!, January 10, 2008
This review is from: Labor of Love: Mothers Share the Joy of Childbirth (Paperback)
Even though I am early in my pregnancy and the realities of labor loom distant, I not only enjoyed reading the stories of birth, I learned a lot about myself and my own opinions of how I want my baby's birth to happen. Ms. Zimmer captures the joys and pains of the very different styles of giving birth. What the women in this book all share, however, is a truly positive view of their labor even if it didn't go as planned. For a pregnant woman, hearing how wonderful labor can be, however it may be, is not only reassuring but exciting.
