Excellent sword and sorcery novel,
By
This review is from: Lachlei (Paperback)
This story is set in a universe where there are nine separate worlds, connected to each other through the World Tree. This is the source of the Web of Wyrd, which runs through the Nine Worlds. A millennia ago, the three warring gods nearly destroyed mankind. Now one of them, Areyn Sehduk, the god of death, has returned to finish the job.
He kills Fialan, leader of the lochvaur, hoping to tip the balance of power in his favor. Sehduk does not take into account that he has created a powerful enemy in Lachlei, queen of the lochvaur. Vowing vengeance against the rival clan led by Sehduk, Lachlei leads her people into a fight against demons and the undead. Rhyn'athel, another of the three gods, is the only being powerful enough to defeat Sehduk. He takes human form, and joins Lachlei's warriors, in order to stop Sehduk, once and for all. He doesn't reveal his identity to Lachlei, but his abilities are not those of the average mortal. Rhyn'athel also falls in love with Lachlei. Meantime, Fialan is not exactly dead. He finds himself on Tarentor, another of the Nine Worlds, part of an army of the dead. It's controlled by Sehduk, so the warriors have no free will, and are forced to fight against their own people. Once on Elren, where this takes place, they must eat real food, and they have corporeal form. Every minute they are there, they become more of Elren, and less of Tarentor. This is an excellent sword and sorcery novel that is pretty heavy on the sorcery part. It's got good characters, led by a very strong female warrior, it's got an exciting story, and it is very much recommended.

A pick for fantasy collections everywhere.,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lachlei (Paperback)
The god of death and annihilator of the human race walks among them. "Lachlei" is the story of a queen who faces off against clan led by the god of death, and faced with the daunting task of defeating him and avenging her husband. The emergence of a god of warriors to counter act the god of death makes the odds more interesting, as Lachlei finds herself the focus of two gods, both who want to do vastly different things to her. "Lachlei" is a deftly written and intriguing fantasy novel from first page to last and a pick for fantasy collections everywhere.

Glad to revisit Maggie's M.H. Bonham's World,

Every now and then I latch on to a writer who I will follow zealously. M.H. Bonham is one such writer. I enjoyed her debut novel, Prophecy of Swords very much. So I was very much looking forward to Lachlei.
This novel fills in a lot of back story for the world of Elren. And though the characters aren't the same as in Prophecy of Swords, the groundwork is laid for what is to come. Bonham's Lachlei underpins Prophecy of swords nicely. Fans of the series will not be dissappointed.

This Is Truly Five Star Reading!,
This review is from: Lachlei (Paperback)
I'm relatively new to the Fantasy Genre. I picked up Lachlei
because I wanted to read something different. I was not disappointed. I was pulled into the story from the very first sentence. Lachlei, the Queen of Lochvaur is a strong warrior who bravely goes into battle against a rival clan to avenge her murdered husband. Ryhn'athel is The Warrior God who comes to the aid of Lachlei and her clan disguised as a mortal. Areyn Sehduk, The God of Death is the epitomy of a true villain and is hell bent on destroying everything and everyone that Ryhn'athel created. This story was amazing and I could not put it down. I really appreciate it when there are no lull moments. I never knew what was going to happen next and was pleasantly surprised throughout the entire story. I will definitely add more of this authors work to my bookshelf.

Characters/characterizations were strong.
Cities and other world descriptions were good but not particularly strong in imagery. I didn't get a strong sense for what was where in the world, nor the basic characteristics of the races/peoples involved or how they lived. Other books by the author do somewhat better in this regard. It was still a good read and I recommend it as a good epic fantasy book. One thing I liked about the book was a lack of gaping plot holes that are so rampant in the genre. The good guys did what they did for appropriate reasons and the bad guys did the same.

This is a stroy about several gods and their interactions with
humans. I liked Lachlei, and wished she had been romantically linked with Ni'yah instead of his petulant brother Rhyn'athiel. I would rate the story at more than four stars but less than five. At the price the electronic versions of Bonham's books are going, they are a real bargan: I just bought several of the other Bonham books. |
