3.0 out of 5 stars Ric A Che, more miss than hit, June 24, 2004
When you first open this cd, you are blasted with picture on the cd warning that it is a criminal offense to illegally copy this cd. This warning is also repeated in the album notes. What is ironically funny about this is that on his album, Mr. A Che regularly boasts of smoking weed, which is also a criminal offense. It's funny how Ric a Che seems to pick and choose the laws that he wants to follow and to be enforced. One law that he forgets to enforce himself, is to "come original." This album starts out with an intro (that is so 90s) and in this intro, he (laughably) promises to "change the game"...yeah, right. Wow, where'd he come up with that original line? On every hip hop cd ever made? Probably. Anyway besides the fact that Ric a Che takes himself way too seriously this album has its high points. The first three songs are great, and they are a bit original, if a little reminiscent of N.E.R.D. (who are true innovators) then, of course, Mr. A Che has to include stupid skits which are not funny and serve no purpose other than filling up emtpy space and aping the 5 million other hip hoppers out there who feel compelled to fill their albums with meaningless skits ever since they heard Dre's The Chronic. Of course "Coo Coo Chee" is great, but that's where it ends. The rest of the album gets "thugged out" and the beats and rap styles sound like D12 throwaways. It's as if he's trying to convince his audience that he really is gangsta. Ric a Che would help himself a lot if he realized that the smooth, almost sweet sound of Coo Coo Chee is where he does what he does best: his voice is like honey and the beat, simple and clean. If he stuck to more of that, and a few more songs that tried new things (like his first three) this album might be a hit, unfortunately for Mr. A Che, who boasts in a skit on this album that this album is going platnium, this attempt is more miss than hit. Three stars for a truly recycled sound.
