Of course it is not antique lacquerware. It is urushi-nuri (漆塗) which means "lacquer coating." The red is lacquer over black plastic. It is what is used in high-end Japanese Restaurants and exactly what I expected. In fact I must have ordered a complete set since the inner shipping box is printed in Japanese (which means that it probably wasn't printed for export). Because it has a lacquer coating it is heat resistant but not heat proof. I already knew this from similar lacquer-on-plastic rice cups that I bought in Japan and that didn't make it through the dishwasher very well: hand wash.

I ordered a few of these. I was expecting to receive some nice quality "Lacquered" bento box just like the ones we found at the Japanese restaurant. In fact, these were just removable molded plastic trays (the red part) with a black rectangular plastic box. I doubt that this is BPA free (there is no description of the material printed anywhere), so I wouldn't dare putting food that's too hot in there. I actually like the fact that these bento boxes are just plastic, because it's more low maintenance than the lacquer ones. I just wished that the seller of this product had not put up that mis-leading title name and description, which makes me feel tricked into paying more for plastic.

I was looking for a set of plates to use that would make it easier to eat small portions of lots of different kinds of foods, and this fits the bill perfectly.

I removed the black outer boxes and was pleased to see that the inner, divided plate part stacks easily. I am now using the outer black boxes as drawer organizers.

So far (about 8 cycles) they have been fine in the microwave and dishwasher.

Whenever I serve a Bento box dinner and these boxes certainly hold enough food for dinner, folks are delighted. I think they make everything taste great and it's made me a better oriental cook...ttj,
