Incredible, unique debut,
By wordnerd64 (Kansas City, MO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lacuna Coil (Audio CD)
I have to laugh when I read all of the reviews for Lacuna Coil's CD's; every reviewer struggles to define what "style" or "type" of rock this very talented band plays. I've seen comparisons to everyone from The Gathering to Queensryche - that's a pretty wide spread! The fact is, Lacuna Coil does not sound like anyone else. They do have tag-team male/female vocals like many Gothic/Doom metal bands, but the male vocals here are 'clean,' with no grunts or growls. They also play somewhat dark, melancholy music, but there is an overall sense of lightness, maybe even fun, weaved into their sound and that is what gives them their unique quality. Christina Scabbia has one of the most beautiful, haunting voices you'll ever hear, and Lacuna Coil's songs are appealing to anyone who likes rock...no matter what "style" they usually prefer. The most amazing thing about this debut is that, as good as it is, each of their subsequent CD's has each been better than the last. The only reason this one gets only 4 stars is because it is a bit short (only 6 songs).

I've noticed that Lacuna Coil's EP isn't the most well-liked thing in their catalog. I can understand that completely but if you can't see the beauty you're given with this, then you must be blind. EPs aren't something I necessarily like because it seems as though every band simply re-releases the songs from the EP onto a different CD where they, most of the time, completely redo the song. In Lacuna Coil's case however, aside from Falling, no song has been re-released on a different CD which means that this is all fresh material that the beginning Lacuna Coil fans probably haven't heard yet.
No Need To Explain is by no means LC's best opening track, nor is it their best song period. Bear in mind though that this is simply the beginnings of a band that rose up to become an extraordinary group. If you keep that in the back of your head throughout this EP then you'll be fine. No Need To Explain is one of this CDs stronger moments that shows Cristina's vocal abilities quite well on this release. The Secret... shows Lacuna Coil's trademark sound, that being Andrea and Cristina trading off on vocal duties. There's a nice guitar part after the first chorus that is really catchy too. This Is My Dream is the EPs true highlight. Andrea's vocal performance is perfect and trades off to Cristina so seamlessly. I've tried to describe this very song to people but I always come up short, never doing the song the justice it deserves. Soul Into Hades shows Cristina at her peak on this CD, though the rest of the song seems a bit bland. Falling, alongside This Is My Dream, is the other highlight this disc offers. Falling is very dreamy with excellent acoustics putting the vocals on display very nicely. This is another song I find almost impossible to describe. Un Fantasma Tra Moi (A Ghost Between Us) rounds out the EP very well. If they would've flipped this song and Falling, it would've sounded better I think, but I still like this song either way. My favorite songs are The Secret..., This Is My Dream, and Falling. I'm fairly certain any random listener could grasp any Lacuna Coil CD but with this self-titled EP I'm not so sure. In my case, it took me months before I finally came to love every song. I'm sure if you gave it enough time to wear on you that you'll appreciate it the way I do, but if you just don't have patience and aren't a fan of the rawer side of Lacuna Coil then don't go anywhere near this CD.

BUY THIS CD!,
By Chris Pinto (Mahopac, NY United States) - See all my reviews

I bought this CD without ever even hearing their music (a friend recommended them to me), I plopped it in my CD player and utterly flipped out! I couldn't believe just how good this CD was! This CD hasn't left my CD player since I bought it! From the very first song right up until the last song...It KICKS! The best way to describe Lacuna Coil is similar to Queensryche & The Gathering. Light, refreshing, progressive, technical metal with a female vocalist. If you're tired of the same ol' metal, listen to Lacuna Coil! When I first heard the first song on this CD, it brought me back to the very first time I heard "Queen Of The Ryche" by Queensryche. Lacuna Coil's music is not as heavy as the first few Queensryche albums, but, their music is JUST as exciting! This is simply one of the best CD's I've ever bought! EVER! By the way, their latest CD is awesome too. No dissapointments here. This group is going places.....
