4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible, unique debut
I have to laugh when I read all of the reviews for Lacuna Coil's CD's; every reviewer struggles to define what "style" or "type" of rock this very talented band plays. 3.0 out of 5 stars A Mellower Lacuna (really 3 1/2 stars)
This debut release has some quality music on it, but if you don't yet own any Lacuna Coil recordings, I would recommend starting with 'Comalies', their latest release. 'Comalies' has more catchy, "shiny/flashy"-type tunes that really showcase the band's musical evolution of talent over the years. Then if you want to explore their music further (and especially if you...

I have to laugh when I read all of the reviews for Lacuna Coil's CD's; every reviewer struggles to define what "style" or "type" of rock this very talented band plays. I've seen comparisons to everyone from The Gathering to Queensryche - that's a pretty wide spread! The fact is, Lacuna Coil does not sound like anyone else. They do have tag-team male/female vocals like many Gothic/Doom metal bands, but the male vocals here are 'clean,' with no grunts or growls. They also play somewhat dark, melancholy music, but there is an overall sense of lightness, maybe even fun, weaved into their sound and that is what gives them their unique quality. Christina Scabbia has one of the most beautiful, haunting voices you'll ever hear, and Lacuna Coil's songs are appealing to anyone who likes rock...no matter what "style" they usually prefer. The most amazing thing about this debut is that, as good as it is, each of their subsequent CD's has each been better than the last. The only reason this one gets only 4 stars is because it is a bit short (only 6 songs).

5.0 out of 5 stars I cannot write all my confessions, December 28, 2005
By
This review is from: Lacuna Coil (Audio CD)
I've noticed that Lacuna Coil's EP isn't the most well-liked thing in their catalog. I can understand that completely but if you can't see the beauty you're given with this, then you must be blind. EPs aren't something I necessarily like because it seems as though every band simply re-releases the songs from the EP onto a different CD where they, most of the time, completely redo the song. In Lacuna Coil's case however, aside from Falling, no song has been re-released on a different CD which means that this is all fresh material that the beginning Lacuna Coil fans probably haven't heard yet.

No Need To Explain is by no means LC's best opening track, nor is it their best song period. Bear in mind though that this is simply the beginnings of a band that rose up to become an extraordinary group. If you keep that in the back of your head throughout this EP then you'll be fine. No Need To Explain is one of this CDs stronger moments that shows Cristina's vocal abilities quite well on this release. The Secret... shows Lacuna Coil's trademark sound, that being Andrea and Cristina trading off on vocal duties. There's a nice guitar part after the first chorus that is really catchy too. This Is My Dream is the EPs true highlight. Andrea's vocal performance is perfect and trades off to Cristina so seamlessly. I've tried to describe this very song to people but I always come up short, never doing the song the justice it deserves. Soul Into Hades shows Cristina at her peak on this CD, though the rest of the song seems a bit bland. Falling, alongside This Is My Dream, is the other highlight this disc offers. Falling is very dreamy with excellent acoustics putting the vocals on display very nicely. This is another song I find almost impossible to describe. Un Fantasma Tra Moi (A Ghost Between Us) rounds out the EP very well. If they would've flipped this song and Falling, it would've sounded better I think, but I still like this song either way.

My favorite songs are The Secret..., This Is My Dream, and Falling. I'm fairly certain any random listener could grasp any Lacuna Coil CD but with this self-titled EP I'm not so sure. In my case, it took me months before I finally came to love every song. I'm sure if you gave it enough time to wear on you that you'll appreciate it the way I do, but if you just don't have patience and aren't a fan of the rawer side of Lacuna Coil then don't go anywhere near this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD!, March 27, 2000

I bought this CD without ever even hearing their music (a friend recommended them to me), I plopped it in my CD player and utterly flipped out! I couldn't believe just how good this CD was! This CD hasn't left my CD player since I bought it! From the very first song right up until the last song...It KICKS! The best way to describe Lacuna Coil is similar to Queensryche & The Gathering. Light, refreshing, progressive, technical metal with a female vocalist. If you're tired of the same ol' metal, listen to Lacuna Coil! When I first heard the first song on this CD, it brought me back to the very first time I heard "Queen Of The Ryche" by Queensryche. Lacuna Coil's music is not as heavy as the first few Queensryche albums, but, their music is JUST as exciting!

This is simply one of the best CD's I've ever bought! EVER! By the way, their latest CD is awesome too. No dissapointments here. This group is going places.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Godsend, December 17, 2003

Lacuna Coil is NOT like any other band, and I think that it's rather sad that this amazing band is catagorized as a goth metal band, which is probably the reason why they're not well known throughout the US. They are extremely talented. Christina Scabbias vocals are gorgeous and the male vocals give it an extra kick. It's completely unfair to compare this band to anyone else, because they're not LIKE anyone else, they're completely original and unique in sound and performance. I would recommend this CD and all of their others to everyone I know, they don't fit in with any genre I can think of, they're just Lacuna Coil and I think everyone from country singers to rappers (well, maybe not rappers) could appreciate this brilliant and well done album, along with their others.

5.0 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC ALBUM!!!!!!!, September 27, 1999

This review is from: Lacuna Coil (Audio CD)
This is an exellent album. This has gat to be one of my very favorite bands. Chritsina has a beutiful voice and uses it well to express the feeling of the music and also to make the listeners heart just sink wether it be a female or male. If you like The Gathering, youll LOVE Lacuna Coil..They are very similar but Lacuna has a little more spice to it because of the male vocals for background vocals.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Mellower Lacuna (really 3 1/2 stars), October 9, 2004

This debut release has some quality music on it, but if you don't yet own any Lacuna Coil recordings, I would recommend starting with 'Comalies', their latest release. 'Comalies' has more catchy, "shiny/flashy"-type tunes that really showcase the band's musical evolution of talent over the years. Then if you want to explore their music further (and especially if you find 'Comalies' a bit heavy/harsh for your taste), buy this 'Lacuna Coil' EP. The overall feel of this EP is more mystical & mellower than the band's other releases.

It's interesting to note that 3 of the musicians left the band after making this EP; the 2 guitar players and the drummer, soon to be replaced for LC's first full-length CD "In A Reverie", since which the line-up has remained constant (adding Marco Biazzi as a 2nd guitarist for their 2nd CD "Unleashed Memories" - I highly recommend both of those CDs by the way). However, the essential Lacuna elements that later become their trademarks begin to shine through here: the superb contrasting male & female vocals of Andrea Ferro & Cristina Scabbia, the creative songwriting & keyboard arrangements of bass player Marco Coti Zelati, and the melodic metal style that is Lacuna's foundation are all evident. In short, you will definitely enjoy this EP if you're already a Lacuna Coil fan, but any of their later releases will appeal more to those who are not yet very familiar with the band.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great release, one of their better ones, April 28, 2004

a lot of bands release EPs as debuts for a variety of reasons. First of all,it's cheaper on them. if you just started as a band, would you have lots of money? Probably not. Second of all, it's faster to record (due to the shortness) so that helps too. a new band doesn't have time to not let their music be heard so they want it out as quickly as possible. Also, and more importanlty, it gives a fans a teaser, makes them want more. YOu here these 6 tracks and love them, you need more. so your going to buy their full lenght soon as it comes out.

so i woulnd't exactly say it's a blunder.

now this just may be lacuna coil's best, despite the shortness. unlike comalies and unleashed memories, this one is more rock/metal orientied than the gothic metal of those previous mentioned albums. Lacuna Coil are great but I never though they were that talented on their instruments until i heard this cd. Very very very good music here folks.

Drawbacks? I guess since it's a debut, christina hasn't yet found her singing style yet. i mean, it still sounds like her but sometimes it doesn't. still, excellent vocals by her.

but, unlike their other cds, the male vocals here are actually tolerable!

bascially, this is a lacuna coil cd for people who can't stand them. but if you can already stand them, then your giong to eat this up, just like me! now to review the great comalies...

3.0 out of 5 stars The Big Tease, January 10, 2002
By
supraliminal (Canon City, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lacuna Coil (Audio CD)
I owned this ep since it came out, and it was a huge tease.... I wanted more Lacuna Coil, and I wanted more of them sounding like their opening cut, No Need To Explain. I'm happy to say I got it, their full lengths slay this ep. Anyway, Lacuna Coil is usually called gothic rock/metal, yet I'm not so sure it's gothic at all per se (pretty female vocals, while mystical and entrancing, don't signify anything medieval people).... more like straight ahead entrancing metal with awesome dueling male and female vocals. Personally, I found this album to be such a tease because only No Need To Explain used healthy amounts of distorted electric guitar and really rocked, the rest was pretty but somewhat blah.... an EP with an EP's price isn't a bad risk or anything, just don't get this for your first taste of Lacuna Coil, at least not without being forewarned that their later full lengths make this sound like, well, what it is really.... a debut ep gearing up for their first album where they don't use all their equipment and haven't perfected the contrast between male and female vocals. Fans of the Gathering (especially ones annoyed by their trend towards softer and softer releases), you'll be happy to know Lacuna Coil reverses that trend.... they get a bit heavier every release..... you MUST listen to LC if you are a Gathering fan. Christina's voice is not as pretty as Anneke's, but she also knows how to sing in the context of the song a whole lot better. Metal with female vocals (and metal in general) doesn't get much better than Lacuna coil.... these guys would be huge if the mainstream wasn't tasteless.

3.0 out of 5 stars The "Italian Evanescence"?, November 2, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lacuna Coil (Audio CD)
The "Italian Evanescence", it's got all the right ingredients, but not all of it comes up right. It's not a great album, but all the elements are present, especially Christina Scabbia's vocals, which are paradise defined. A must-have if you get the "In a Reverie" album - it's got "Falling" and "A Ghost Between Us", which serve as a prelude to "Falling Again" here. My favorite band all-time!

I own all the Lucuna Coil cds and this is still my fav of all. It just has a better sense of character than the rest. I am not saying it is better but on the album you get to hear the singer's voice with minimal effects. Falling is still the best song they have ever done.
