5.0 out of 5 stars a truly delightful heartwarming story
I read this story aloud to my 10 year old daughter and 11 year old son. We laughed, we cried, we wondered what would happen next, we were oh so sorry when the book was done. My kids said it was their all time favorite of the many many books we have read aloud together. This is the kind of story that inspires great character and kindly behavior....something that is...

3.0 out of 5 stars Laddie, A True Blue Story
This book was an old favorite of mine from childhood. I was happy to find it at Amazon and the book was as good as I remembered it, but the type was so small it made the book--a long one--less enjoyable. If I had been looking in a store I would not have bought this edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this book 17 times by the time I was 13, May 17, 1999
By A Customer
Laddie was my most beloved book as a pre-teenager. I absolultely loved the world portrayed, and with each rereading (17 readings in all) I was more caught up in the world of Little Sister (what was her name? We never do find out, do we?) I'm thrilled to see that it's available, as my old copy is in tatters, with pages missing and held together with a rubber band.

5.0 out of 5 stars On the reading list for Mentors, October 15, 2005
By
I chose this classic to read because it was listed as a "must-read" in the book A Thomas Jefferson Education to help parents and teachers learn how to mentor their children through reading of the Classics. I haven't yet finished it, but every spare minute I have (which is hard with three toddlers in the house!), I'm devoting to find out Little Sister's next adventure. I can't wait to see what happens with the Princess and Laddie, and am so glad when things go well for the family.

So vivid a story, I am pleased to be reading this as an adult. Somehow I wasn't required to read it in public school growing up, and therefore just didn't.

4.0 out of 5 stars Superior imagery of a world now lost, June 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Laddie (Paperback)
Gene Stratton-Porter books figured heavily in the world of my childhood. I loved all of them, but a special place was always reserved for Laddie. I have no idea how many times I read it. This look at the lives and personalities of an Indiana farm family provides a glimpse of a world no longer existing. The emphasis on God is a little heavy, but it is seen through the eyes of a fascinating child, and probably illustrates moral values and issues of the time and culture accurately.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not to be Missed, September 19, 2008

LADDIE was one of my favorite books as a child, and reads just as well as an adult. Gene Stratton Porter books maintain their interest and character even in today's world. This kind of book illustrates life in an America that is, sadly, lost forever.

I was one of those who wanted to BE Little Sister, and a part of that world. Like others, I have read it a multitude of times. The writing is magical.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little known diamond in the rough, April 20, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'd never heard of or read Laddie until I reached 39 yrs of age, and though it seems it was written for youth I can think of many adults that would benefit from taking in such earnest literature. The cynical part of me wants to call this book dated, but in truth I find the story's lack of modern day cynicism refreshing. Enjoy this hidden jewel.

By far the author of Laddie (Straton-Porter) is an outstanding story teller. Its warm, entertaining, one of the best books anyone could ever read for themselves or to their young children!!! In my life, this is one book I'm VERY GLAD I READ!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dear Story, May 22, 2008

I bought this book at a used book sale because it was old. I did not know of the book or the author. I began to read it with interest to see what was between these pages - I was not disappointed. I loved the story as told by the young girl. What a delight she was. She almost became real in my mind and I was sorry to find the book ending. I will try to read more of this author.

I loved this book. What a great example of good old-fashioned character and family values. My family and I love these kind of books for family reading time. What a great way to teach character.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, April 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This was an amazing story of a family--filled with love
for each other and an astute understanding and acceptance
of themselves. It brought back memories of my growing up
years, of the importance that unconditional love is to
each individual. I couldn't wait to turn the pages and
have recommended it to my own grown children and grand-
children.
