Had heard of this "one-shot deal" of a group before, but never gave them a serious listen until now. WOW!! I like what I heard, but was only familiar with two of the ladies, Marva Hicks and Sylvia Striplin. After listening to the CD a few times I realized that Roy Ayers called on studio vocalists vs. established artists as the songs come across as more "sing-a-long" than verse, hook/chorus, bridge, etc. and had the ones singing the "lead" ad libbing over the lyrics sung in unison of each track rather than actually leading the song. This is more an observation rather than a legitimate gripe as the music, production and the ladies' flawless harmonies on all the tracks make this CD an enjoyable listen. Worth the time and money.

A short-lived group featuring Marva Hicks and Sylvia Striplin among its members, Eighties Ladies have all but been forgotten by now, and while the album isn't terrible, it doesn't exactly have abundant staying power either despite being produced by Roy Ayers. Striplin and Hicks both had moderately successful solo careers, but the perhaps the most memorable turn ever taken by a member of this group was by Susan Beaubian, who, 8 years after this album was made, played O.J. Simpson's distraught wife in the hilarious comedy film The Naked Gun.

This album is extremely over looked. Being a Roy Ayers fan & of the female voice, WOW this is HOT FUNK to the MAXXX. Love every track but "Turned on to you" is the FUNK. Do yourself a favor just buy it before its gone. Puts today's crap to shame.
