Wonderful Old Time Fiddle, May 1, 2008

I love this recording. It's an open, honest, and intimate document from an absolutely wonderful musician. For most of the tunes, it sounds like he's accompanied by just an acoustic guitar. The sparce soundscape allows the listener an open door to Rafe's formidable technique. Although he's known primarily as an exceptional fiddler, which is abundantly clear on this disc, he treats us to his banjo, guitar, and vocal talents as well.
Rafe's earlier releases on County Records are fine examples of his fiddling prowess. This disc, however, provides us with ample evidence that he's the real deal on everything else he touches. This cd is truly a marvellous statement from a man who has the knack for making old time music sound like its still very much alive and kicking. If you're a fan of this genre, you won't want to pass it by.
19 tunes for about an hours worth of music, with able assistance on some of the tunes from Jim Collier(guitar, mandolin, and vocals), Clelia Stefanini(fiddle and guitar), and Nikki Lee(guitar).
