Biography

Pinetop Perkins is one of the last great Mississippi bluesmen still performing. He began playing blues around 1927, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest blues pianists of all time. He created a style that has influenced three generations of piano players, and will continue to be the yardstick by which great blues pianists are measured.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

At 91 and spry as a kit fox, dapper Mississippi native Joe Willie "Pinetop" Perkins is the reigning king of blues and boogie piano and, as the title suggests, still a charmer. Even when he's singing a tune as un-PC as "Big Fat Mama" ("with the meat shakin' on the bone"), his time-cured voice and playful phrasing have genuine appeal. Most engaging are the duets he sings with a half-dozen divas. They include Ruth Brown, whose wide-mouthed belting powers "Chains of Love"; Susan Tedeschi, who packs smoky beauty and soul into Ivory Joe Hunter's "Since I Lost My Baby"; and Angela Strehli, who puts her sassy Texas accent to work on her tribute "Hey Mr. Pinetop Perkins." Elvin Bishop plays elegant slide response to the call of Perkins's singing on "How Long." The hottest jamming, however, is on the instrumental "Pinetop's New Boogie Woogie," a two-piano variation on his signature tune. The joyfully dueling keys of Perkins and Marcia Ball offer a lesson in barrelhouse that crosses generations and their Texas and Delta roots. --Ted Drozdowski

4.0 out of 5 stars Pinetop's Duets with the Ladies December 3, 2010
Format:Audio CD
Pinetop Perkins was 91 when this CD was released . It is a CD of duets he did with leading women blues stars as well as some songs on his own. Among his duet partners are Deborah Coleman, Susan Tedeschi, Madeline Peyroux (more of a jazz star), Marcia Ball, Angela Strehli, and Odetta. The duets concept has been used by many others but what makes this good is he chooses really good and diverse artists to work with. A very good CD with a lot of top talent in support of one of blues top piano players. 4.5 Stars.

What can be said about Pinetop Perkins that hasn't already been said? He plays wonderfully on these tracks and each duet blends into the music like Pinetop and the ladies have always sung and played together. It's a fun CD and will have you tapping your feet and rooting for Mr. Perkins to live for another 97 years!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable November 3, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This was my first music download from Amazon, and it was worth it. If you like Pintop Perkins you can't go wrong here. Pinetop isn't the strongest singer, though he isn't bad either. What he does here is work with several vocalists and does what he does best, plays great piano. This is a fun and enjoyable collection of music!
