5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites, November 4, 1998
This review is from: Lady Be Good ...for Ella (Audio CD)
Listening to these recordings gives one the same feeling as one would have re-reading love letters that have been carefully tucked away. The very best tribute to Ella Fitzgerald there could possibly be ... Tommy brings these beautiful tunes to life with his incredible style of playing. This isn't a recording just for fans of Ella or Tommy ... it's a must-have for anyone who enjoys good, uplifting music.

5.0 out of 5 stars How To Do Piano Trio Right., July 19, 2002

This review is from: Lady Be Good ...for Ella (Audio CD)
That could well be the sub-title of this cd. There's a lot of emotion packed in this cd as could be expected from an accompanist of Ella's for 12+ years.

How do you like "Lady Be Good", as a ballad or at a fast tempo? Fortunately for all of us, we get both the ballad as an opener and a joyous uptempo closer with enough improvisation that it is evocative of Ella's singing.

Flanagan was the master of ballads. Both the intimacy and refinement of his ballad style are exemplified in his treatment of "Isn't It A Pity".

The interplay between Flanagan, Washington and Nash is a delight for the ears on the easy swinging "Love You Madly" and the bossa nova styled "Alone Too Long".

Flanagan's bop based style is shown on the mid-tempo "How High The Moon".

Bottom line, the whole cd is great! Whether you like the piano style of Tommy Flanagan, great jazz piano, or a great jazz trio, you will want to own this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tasteful, touching, perfect, August 16, 2001

Tommy Flanagan, undoubtedly one of the greatest jazz pianists of his generation, has a unique touch that cannot be described with words. It is especially true in his ballads. This touching tribute to Ella Fitzgerald offers up a fine example of Flanagan's ballad mastery. Along with "Tommy Flanagan Trio/Moodsville" (Original Jazz Classics), this is my favorite Flanagan session.

This is one of Tommy Flanagan's finest collections, with tempos varying from thoughtful sentimentality to cookin' jazz. It's become one of my favorite albums. Thanks to Pandora . com for bringing it to my attention.
