MY LADY BELOVED,
By Linda (Northeastern United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Lady Beloved (Mass Market Paperback)
Normally I love the books by Linda Lael Miller. This particular book, written as Lael St. James, was a book that I tried for three days to read. I just couldn't get into it. I finally just put it down. I thought it moved very slowly. I much prefer the western historicals that Linda writes.

Great Story - Great Characters,
By A Customer
This review is from: My Lady Beloved (Mass Market Paperback)
I have been a fan of the author since she wrote series romances long ago. This story reminds me of some of my favorite novels that she has written. The characters are fully developed and likeable - or unlikeable in the case of the main character's evil betrothed. The main female character is a woman whose life has long been ruled by duty to her family and her sisters. She is marrying in order to insure that her family is cared for financially, even though she does not like her betrothed. When she is kidnapped by a man who she finds attractive and exciting, she decides to live for herself and falls in love. The story circling around these two lovers is interesting as well and although not completely unpredicatable, it is presented in a fresh and interesting manner. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the storyline at the abby with her sisters was hard to follow and did not seem to fit with the timeline of the rest of the story. However, I can't wait for the next book in this series!

i HAVE JUST FINISHED READING "MY LADY BELOVED". i FOUND IT INTERESTING HISTORICALLY, VERY READABLE AND WITH A STORY LINE WHICH FLOWED EXTREMELY WELL. THE HEROINE WAS FEISTY, AND CONCERNED AND FILLED WTIH LOVE FOR HER SISTERS. THE HERO ARROGANTLY BELIEVABLE. I ENJOY MEDIEVAL NOVELS BUT I DON'T ALWAYS FIND THEM ENGROSSING, THIS ONE WAS.

I normally really like Linda Lael Miller books. However, this book attempts to give frontier motivations and actions to the English Middle Ages. Not believable.

A Beloved Book,

This review is from: My Lady Beloved (Mass Market Paperback)
Linda Lael Miller writing as Lael St. James has done it again! This book made me laugh, and cry, which to me is a sign of a great book. Morgan and Gabriella's story will capture your heart after the first few chapters. Set in England 1369 Gabriella is abducted by Morgan seeking vegeance on an old foe Avendall whom Gabriella is betrothed to. But in the end he has captured his Lady Beloved. A good book to add to your summer reading list.

Lackluster medieval,

This review is from: My Lady Beloved (Mass Market Paperback)
Gabriella Redclift knows the duty she owes her family. She must marry, and marry well, to fill the family coffers with much needed coin and to provide her dowries for two sisters. Sir Cyprian Avendall's offer of marriage seems like a dream come true to the sheltered girl. Although she dislikes him on sight, as his wife she will live in a grand keep in Cornwall and always have enough to eat. Best of all, her sisters will be safe. When Avendall's men arrives to escort her to her bridegroom, she promises her sisters that she will ask Sir Cyprian to contract marriages for them.
Morgan Chaltstrey, the Duke of Edgefield, has been waiting a long time to seek his revenge against Cyprian Avendall for his role in the death of Morgan's betrothed, Rebecca. Now that Avendall has sought his own bride, Morgan's revenge will be to hold Gabriella hostage. Morgan and his men easily defeat Avendall's men and take off with Gabriella and her chaperon, Dame Johanna. What follows is a battle of the sexes as Gabriella fights to fulfill her duty knowing that her failure will be the downfall of her entire family, while Morgan struggles to remember Rebecca in the face of Gabriella's beauty and spirit. Avendall is never far away, less concerned with his betrothed's well-being than her virtue. Lael St. James is a pseudonym for Linda Lael Miller, an author who is best known for her Sweetwater frontier historicals and Tremayne vampire series. While MY LADY BELOVED was an enjoyable read, I could not bond with the main characters at all. In the course of the story, it is clear that Gabriella is maturing as a woman, but her actions often make her appear childish and impetuous. Politically incorrect as it sounds, I thought she might have benefited from a spanking or two from Morgan. Of course, Gabriella's behavior colored my perception of Morgan as well. It is difficult to imagine a battle-hardened knight, much less a duke, putting up with a young girl's antics. The rest of the characters fulfill their roles admirably from the villainous Avendall to the compassionate Dame Johanna. Gabriella's sisters, Meg and Elizabeth, also made quite an impression and I look forward to their stories. TheSchemer

The perfect medieval romance,
This review is from: My Lady Beloved (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1369 England, Gabriella Redclift wants a lifetime of love with her spouse. However, aristocratic women have little say in society. Gabriella is betrothed to Sir Cyprian Avendell, a person she does not know having met him once briefly. Cyprian sends for Gabriella so they can marry, but fails to join the escort party. While Gabriella travels near Devonshire, the Duke of Edgerfield sees her as an instrument of revenge for Cyprian destroying his beloved childhood friend Rebecca. However, Morgan Chalstrey never expected to have his pawn capture his heart as he vowed to never love again. MY LADY BELOVED is a pleasurable medieval romance that fans of those historical tales will enjoy. The story line is fun and exciting though it remains inside the sub-genre box. The lead charcaters are intrepid and amusing as they duel with words and love. However, the villain is painted as vile and abusive so that Rebecca never has to face the dilemma of honor vs. love. A Lael by any other name is still a Lael and Ms. St. James provides her fans a delightful couple of nights of entertainment. Harriet Klausner

Gabriella Redcliff is kidnapped on her way to her wedding by Duke with a grudge against her betrothed. After a number of fights and disagreements, Gabriella realizes the knight she is betrothed too is not very honorable at all and falls head over heels for her kidnapper. The ending is not totally complete, to be continued in the next book My Lady Wayward
