Solid PI stuff, May 11, 2008
This review is from: Lady in Cement (Mass Market Paperback)
Originally published under the "Anthony Rome" penname. Rather typical tough guy PI story of it's time, although a bit better than the standard -- imagine a really good Michael Shayne installment and you're close to the mark. Hard for me to believe John D MacDonald didn't borrow the central device of a woman with concrete overshoes for his Travis McGee novel DARKER THAN AMBER.
Albert rarely surprises but was a consummate professional during the time when stalwart meat and potatoes kinds of writers were the rule, not the exception. That is to say, this is craftsmanlike, not especially exceptional but very pleasing if you have a feel for the genre. The other Tony Rome novel I have, MIAMI MAYHEM, is also quite good.
