Get It For the Sound Quality,
By Peter (East of Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Lady Day's 25 Greatest: 1933-1944 (Audio CD)
Why purchase another Billie Holiday compilation CD when you probably already own dozens? Well, for one, the sound quality on this compilation is certainly a cut or two above the rest. Hisses are noticeably absent while preserving the highs often missing from most of Billie's compiled stuff. Since it's officially an import CD from England sold at an "unimported" price, affordable--that is, the Billie fan should get it for its bargain value. It collects songs from Billie's golden period from her Columbia days (most in 1930s) and adds several tracks from her Decca period (mid '40s), so you know the songs all show Billie well before her publicized decline. It really is refreshing hearing the same tracks on this CD sounding totally different (and better) than ones on your old Columbia and Decca's. Of interest are also two live tracks taken from a concert in 1944, so you get to hear a peak Billie in a concert setting. Worth the effort getting this.

The only disappointment is the omission of "Autumn in New York" my personal favorite, although I believe recorded outside the scope of this album.
