An Entertaining Saga Continues, September 8, 2001
This review is from: Lady Death: Between Heaven & Hell ( Volume 2 ) (Lady Death Series) (Paperback)
This is a collection of the second chapter in Lady Death's "life" in Hell: Lady Death-Between Heaven and Hell!
Since her appearence in Hell over 500 years ago, the mortal Hope transformed into a cold, imminent, powerful, majestic goddess of death. She has been the direct cause of over 40 million deaths and the number continues to rise thanks to her earthly emissary Evil Ernie who will do anything for his Lady love to achieve the goal of Megadeath - the destruction of all life on Earth! Such a powerful goddess must certainly have no enemies foolish enough to challenge her....surely.
This is Hell, however......where those who dare to challenge other creatures of the night must have no fear of their opponent...
Enter Purgatori, Lucifer's former "beloved"- a demonic vampiress who's skin is as red as the blood she drinks from her victims. She disappeared over 25 centuries ago from Hell and now is back to capture the power of Lucifer, but the Lady stands in her way! What follows is a cat fight to wake the damned!
Also, Between Heaven and Hell is also chock full of secret revealations about Lady Death's past that she didn't even know about. What's her link to the infamous Fallen Angels? How did she enter Hell so easily? Is she truly in charge of her own "life" and controls her own destiny? These questions and more, as well as their answers are all here in this volume.
Also, in this volume, you see the return of characters long believed to be dead for the last 500 years!!!
Anyone who's a fan of Milton's Paradise Lost, Dante's Inferno, or stories of a goth nature, will love Lady Death and the characters of her horrorverse!
A great read worth the money!

lady death : between heaven and hell, November 25, 2010
This review is from: Lady Death: Between Heaven & Hell ( Volume 2 ) (Lady Death Series) (Paperback)
i can't imagine too many people would read this if you already are not a fan of lady death and the once chaos! comics.
for me personally no one draws lady death like steven hughes, i just can't get into the newer versions of her no matter how good the story or art is. the story and the art in this alone is the pinnacle of lady death's life i think.
steven was probably very much so under-rated, the attention to detail, no shortage of backgrounds and action scenes that did not need captions to explain what was going on. sometimes i can hear what is going on in the scene without the use of sound effects. he by no means is the best, but he is very, very good, especially his rendition of lady death. he draws her the way i like and the way i picture i woman from hell to look like. deathly pale skin, long flowing hair, a size 6 torso, legs that go to heaven and very, very big boobs.
the tale brian weaves is very much engrossing (what there is of it, as the majority of the book is just a series of action scenes with character backgrounds thrown in intermittently) and as far as i'm aware unique to the comics medium. it's an amalgamation of religious and mythological tales just done for a male oriented audience.
it's almost like brian had a tale to tell but if it wasn't a bad girl type character and was just some other male super hero type that was the lead role he would of just got lost in the mix of other characters, i.e evil ernie. evil ernie is a great character that had a great story yet died (pretty much, he had a short lived stint in hack/slash) when chaos! did.
yet lady death still lives.
on to the comic itself -
i don't want to give away too much because it's always nice to find things out as you read them and not have someone tell it to you. although this is not a book for shocking twists and turns, the sexual innuendo and violence is the shocking part (if you are the type to be shocked).
basically, it picks up where the reckoning left off. lady death is ruler of hell and she has to defend her throne from purgatori, lucifer and turns into lady demon herself.
the actions scenes are fast, furious and make up the majority of the book. the story is pretty straight forward and reads very quickly and does repeat itself a few times at the beginning of each issue unfortunately, but hey i didn't buy it for the classic piece of literature it his.
i like girls with big boobs in skimpy outfits fighting others in bloody and brutal encounters. the setting of hell and the medieval ages during the plague just sweetens the deal. it really gives the book a somber and dark feel.
not for everyone, but if your reading this then it's definitely for you.

If you like gothic fantasy or sword and sorcery get it! Fun read, like first one, and nothing else! Much better than Evil Ernie!
