Book Description

...IT'S HIS TOWN AND HE DARES GOD TO STEP FOOT IN IT.

Charles McIntyre owns everything and everyone in the lawless, godless mining town of Defiance. When three good, Christian sisters from his beloved South show up stranded, alone, and offering to open a "nice" hotel, he is intrigued enough to let them stay...especially since he sees feisty middle sister Naomi as a possible conquest. But Naomi, angry with God for widowing her, wants no part of Defiance or the saloon-owning, prostitute-keeping Mr. McIntyre. It would seem however, that God has gone to elaborate lengths to bring them together. The question is, "Why?" Does God really have a plan for each and every life?

Written with gritty, but not gratuitous, realism uncharacteristic of historical Christian fiction, A Lady in Defiance gives a nod to both Pride and Prejudice and Redeeming Love. The story, based on true events, is an "ensemble" piece that deftly weaves together the relationships of the three sisters and the rowdy residents of Defiance.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is the best book I have read since Lasting Impression, A Belmont Novel by TAMERA ALEXANDER. It is also the first book I have read by Heather Blanton and will not be the last." --Pegaleg, Amazon Reviewer

"A Lady in Defiance has certainly become one of my favorite books and Heather Blanton a new favorite author."  --Annie Grace Woods, Amazon Reviewer

"I thoroughly enjoyed this book. This was my first time reading a book by this author and she's now one of my new favorites! I love how she writes. I felt like I was walking through the dusty streets of this little town and I love how all the characters were so believable. A wonderful Christian historical romance. I cannot wait until the next book. " --Miranda, Amazon Reviewer

From the Inside Flap

"Oh, I don't mean to make it sound as if I'm angry or to be pitied, Mrs. Miller. I'm truly content." McIntyre placed cards on the table with skilled, easy movements as he talked. "Taking God out of the equation frees a man to find his own destiny, make his own way without worrying about divine whimsy...There." Naomi looked down and saw that he had placed two cards in front of each of them; a ten and an eight stared up at her. He was graced with a king and a five. "The French call this Vingt-Et-Un. We call it Blackjack. The object is to get as close to twenty-one as possible without going over. Whoever is the closest wins. If you win, Mrs. Miller, I will give you that building for your hotel. If you lose," he paused. "If you lose, you will run the hotel for me."

Her face paled. "I can't agree to that."

"You're fifteen hundred miles from the Carolinas and still a thousand miles from California. I'd say your options are limited." While the statement was true, he didn't wish to frame things in such a grim light. "I've got fifteen," he said tapping his cards. "You have eighteen. The odds are in your favor."

4.0 out of 5 stars An engaging and very enjoyable read. March 11, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I truly enjoyed this gem of a book. The characters were vivid and well-written. Very descriptive; you could see, taste and touch the gritty town of Defiance and it's less-than-savory citizenry. The friendship between the sisters was real and honest. Most enjoyable, though, was the saucy relationship between Naomi and Charles. I was up half the night reading! Hope there will be a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lady in Defiance April 15, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I truly enjoyed A Lady in Defiance. I felt that I had stepped back in time with the characters. It is an easy read and I did not want to put it down. This is my first read from this author and I look forward to any thing else that she may publish. I like this kind of historical fiction/Christian fiction.

I recently bought my first e-reader and this is one of the first books that I read on it. I thought is was a very good book. You never quite know what you are going to get with an author that is unfamiliar. but I was pleasantly surprised. I look forward to more by this author!

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much discription. February 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was areally good story. Great characters. I don't read Harlequin because they go so far into the fleshy details.
It is only my preference. I wouldn't suggest this book because parts were rated R with nothing left to the imagination. It would have been Great if it were not for those parts. Some young Christians have never been exposed to situations like the Flowers did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Our God is a God of second chances July 29, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
My sister lent me this book, "Lady in Defiance," from her kindle to mine. I couldn't put it down! The writing was superb, the bantering was heartwarming, the storyline was well thought out, and our Lord was glorified! I would love a sequel. Heather Blanton has it all together!

5.0 out of 5 stars "Delightful Read" March 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
This was a most enjoyable read. This was my first reading from this author and was not disappointed. The author, in my opinion, created very loving and believeable characters. With each turning page, you were eager to find out more about them and what choices they would make and if they would stand firm. Life is full of choices and we are given a "free will" to make choices but as indicated throughout the story we are never left alone though the choice we've made was not a good one. This is brought out in the story with perfection. The author, Heather Blanton, created believeable and heart-warming characters of whom live long with you after you have finished. She has a way, although characters are fictional, to draw you into their lives; experiencing their struggles and joys, cheering them on in keeping with their faith and anticipating the outcome of their walk in faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entrancing story September 4, 2012

I really enjoyed this book by Heather Blanton. I can't believe it's her first! A very professional and seasoned writer. I loved the descriptions of the town of Defiance and it's very 'interesting' citizens. The book had a lot of inspirational Christian content, with the theme of forgiveness being central to the story. I liked that the characters weren't perfect. Each of them had their own strengths and weaknesses. If you like Francine Rivers and Tamera Alexander, then you'll enjoy this book immensely. I look forward to reading more books in the series (hopefully there will be more).

More About the Author

Heather started writing when she was five; her first tale was a ghost story that her mom typed up for her on a Brother typewriter. Over the years, she has worked as a journalist for newspapers, magazines, and blogs. She has also spent decades in the corporate communications field, marketing everything from software to motorcycles. (Did she really just say "decades"?)

A Lady in Defiance, loosely based on true events, is set in the majestic San Juan Mountains of Colorado, the most beautiful place in the world. While a romance, it is also an "ensemble" piece that weaves together the relationships of the three sisters and the rowdy residents of Defiance. Heather has two sisters whom she loves dearly. One is still with us, the other crossed over to be with Lord in 1999 and it is she who inspired the character of Hannah.

Heather grew up on a steady diet of Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and John Wayne Westerns. Her most fond memories are of sitting next to her dad, munching on popcorn, and watching Lucas McCain unload that Winchester! She loves exploring out West and would happily spend all her time researching and exploring ghost towns till the cows come home.

Heather lives with her husband and two adventurous boys on a farm outside Raleigh, NC. They enjoy riding practically anything with four legs or two wheels, and being outdoors. The boys really spend a lot of time outdoors because their mother spends a lot of time listening to 80's music, but they love her anyway.
