Biography

Doing the unexpected has almost become expected of LeAnn Rimes. From her hit “Blue” nearly 15 years ago to her impressive new concept album of classic country standards, Lady & Gentlemen, LeAnn has always bravely followed her own inner compass and consistently maintained her musical integrity rather than simply following the musical trends of the day.

Editorial Reviews

Lady And Gentlemen is a creative concept album co-produced by LeAnn Rimes, country superstar Vince Gill and successful writer, Darrell Brown. It features country classic songs by the likes of George Jones, Merle Haggard and Waylon Jennings, all sung from a modern female s perspective. Says LeAnn, "This album was born out of the memories of when I first fell in love with country music and in reflecting, I realized that almost all of my favorite country songs from back then were sung by men. I am honored to take a step back in time and sing these songs from a woman's perspective and hopefully help reintroduce them to a new audience." The album features the Grammy Award nominated song "Swingin " (Best Female Country Vocal Performance) along with the moving single "Give," "Crazy Women" and an anniversary edition of "Blue" as bonus tracks.

Customer Reviews

I am a huge Leann Rimes fan!
Sasha
I've liked at least one or two songs on all of Leann's albums, but this one is great from beginning to end.
Rick
Truly fantastic, Leann shows maturity in her voice, arrangement and song selections here.

LeAnn has had a varied career, sometimes recording pop and sometimes recording country, not forgetting an inspirational album and a Christmas album. For this album, she chose to record covers of some of her favorite country albums. Several famous female country singers have recorded such albums in recent years, but whether by choice or otherwise, LeAnn has avoided all but one of the really obvious tracks.

The set opens with Swingin', the John Anderson classic rocking country song from 1983. Apparently, this was one of LeAnn's favorite songs during her childhood. My own favorite John Anderson song is Your lying blue eyes, but Swingin' is a good choice. Next up is Wasted days and wasted nights, one of Freddy Fender's big country hits of the seventies. LeAnn goes back to the sixties for Only mama that'll walk the line, a gender-adapted version of Waylon's best sixties song. Lynn Anderson recorded this song back in the sixties. ETA - as did Linda Ronstadt (see comments on this review).

Perhaps the least-known cover here is I can't be myself, one of Merle Haggard's less famous songs. The oldest song here is 16 tons (Tennessee Ernie Ford, which seems particularly appropriate for the harsh economic times prevailing when this album was recorded. By far the most obvious selection here is Help me make it through the night, but she does this song so well that I'm glad she chose it. Excellent covers of Rose colored glasses (John Conlee), A good hearted woman (the Waylon and Willie), When I call your name (Vince Gill, who also co-produced the album) and He stopped loving her today (George Jones) are well-chosen.

LeAnn continues with a re-recording of Blue, the title track of her debut album all those years ago and which has become one of LeAnn's own classics.

I think this is a really great album. If you like COUNTRY, not country-pop, not country-rock, this album is for you. It's very classic country. The songs are relatively short and tell simple stories. LeAnn's voice shines on this album like it hasn't before. I really think her voice has matured and is in it's prime right now. She's always had a strong voice but I think it's at its best right now.

The standout songs for me are "16 Tons" "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" and "I Can't Be Myself." But the song I keep going back to is "Help Me Make It Through The Night." That is a BEAUTIFUL song and LeAnn sings it with so much emotion.

This is one of my favorite albums that LeAnn has done. All but 2 tracks are covers of old country songs and she did GREAT on those covers. There's also two of her own songs, "Crazy Women" and "Give" which are very good songs as well. This album is definitely worth purchasing!

Love her voice, but I do find myself skipping quite a few of her faster songs in search of her ballads.

I like this album but she could have done better with some songs. Some songs do not need to be remade, the original is better. I love Leann Rimes and I love all the songs she remade, just not my favorite work.

Best country album in a long time. I fell in love with country music in the 80's, when country was country.

Then Leann exploded onto the music world. She's been underrated and over looked for the last half of this decade because she dared to be ahead of her time with crossover country/pop. Now everyone does it, and no one give a hoot whether, any other so called country star sings anything they want, and call it country. It's a shame that she peaked so young. Singers who are the same age or younger, can't carry a tune, who have been round for the blink of an eye, are getting more recognition than she is.

The fact that country critics have given her new Album 4 star reviews, shows that the industry has gotten over it's self, I wish the same can be said for it's older fan base. Lady & Gentleman debuted at #7 on the billboard country chart and is also #7 on amazons country chart. Maybe this generation can look at others and see their mistakes and poor judgment in themselves and learn to separate the personal and professional lives of people who just want to make the world a better place through their music.

There are some strong moments on Leann Rimes' country homage record. Merle Haggard wrote "I Can't Be Myself"; Rimes milks every ounce of sappy emotion from the slow weeper and delivers it powerfully and with sincerity, rising about the material. She also sounds great on the ultra-melancholy super-slow "Help Me Make It Through the Night" that sounds like a romantic wake. "A Good Hearted Woman" is one of the more successful peppier tracks perhaps because Leann latches onto the heartbreak aspect of the lyric and smokes it. She also loves the slow heartbreak on Vince Gill's "When I Call Your Name." On the negative side, "The Only Mama That'll Walk the Line" makes me want to break out an old Linda Ronstadt album. "16 Tons" transforms into a snaky Vegas-style country with brass instruments substituting glitz for grit. My favorite track on the CD is her perky heartbreak ballad "Blue." "Holding onto to hurt like an anchor" Rimes sings on what is more ironically the most upbeat track on the CD, the closer "Give." "Lady & Gentlemen" is not an awful CD, but the material almost totally focuses on breakups; so it does become depressing unless you want to have a few beers and wallow in your latest heartbreak. While much of the music isn't remarkable, there are a couple gems. Enjoy!

I agree 100%. From what I have heard, this may be the best album that LeAnn has ever put out.
