I've read several of Robinson's books and 'Lady Hellfire' is probably my favorite. Independent American miss meets arrogant English aristocrat Alexis then the fireworks begin. Alexis, who has more mistresses than he can handle, is intrigued by the American. He does not, however, approve of her behavior. He thinks to mold her into the proper English lady. Katie's mother, who is English, thinks along those same lines. Katie, who wants to make her mother happy and who finds herself falling for Alexis, tries to become their ideal lady. The trouble lies in the fact that Katie has not had the sheltered life of an English girl. She has run her father's financial empire since his death and is used to doing things her way. She realizes that she is not happy in her new role and also realizes she must be true to herself.
Alexis is an interesting character. Tormented by his past (what romantic hero isn't?), he himself is hardly qualified to try to mold anyone. He should be more concerned with getting his own act together. His mother is obviously ready for Bedlam. His uncle is a religious zealot with a neglected wife who is hardly the proper English lady she appears.
The story, I think, is really about the emergence of Katie's strength of character. She got a little sidetracked during the course of the book. Can't Alexis see that the things he admires about Katie at the beginning of the book are the very things that intrigue him? Can Katie's strength save Alexis from a doomed future? Alexis, so sure of his own superiority, might have benefited from a large conk on the head early in the book.
'Lady Hellfire' is sometimes funny and sometimes sad with an interesting plot and a host of interesting characters to make it an entertaining read.

I was hoping this book would be another Lady Gallant by the author but it was not as good. I think it is more a 3.5 compared to 5 for the other book. Alexis had any women he wanted they fell at his feet. Kate Grey had bought her mother back to her home land of England from America. She was hoping that if would help her mother who could not get over her husband's death. Alexis had a mistress in the house but that did not stop him from getting involed with Kate. His problem and her mother's they wanted her to be a perfect lady. Kate could never be that as she had worked in family business. This book had one mistress dying by fire, and things began happening to Kate. Fauke who looked after Alexis sprouted Bible verses constantlt on the sin of women and what they did. Fulke also lost his wife was one of the incidents in the book. Alexis just couldn't make up his mind if he wanted Kate or not even when they got engaged. The end comes in a rush. He told her almost at the end of the book he was going to get his mistress pregnant. She happened to be married to an older man. He knew when he said that Kate would leave and go back to America. He does that after they finally figure out who the villian is .He was not my favorite person but he had a reason for the way he acted. You won't know until almost the end if there is a HEA. I

I am a Suzanne Robinson fan and one of my best books ever is Lady Gallant. This book is nothing like that and I found it really painful to get through. Although her writing is brilliant as ever, I found the story very difficult to like.

The H is a gorgeous Marquess who has every woman in his vicinity throwing themselves at him. The h was an innocent but feisty American who soon became enthralled despite attracting him by her initial resistance. I found it difficult to accept that she threw herself at him time and time again and he rejected her more than once. He was surrounded by women and even had his ex-mistress staying in his home even while carrying on with the h. He let the h think that he was still involved with the mistress and he didn't truly discourage the mistress either.

Despite sleeping with the h many times, no thought was given to pregnancy. I sincerely hate a character who is a doormat in the physical sense but feisty in other areas. I think the story would have been better if she'd held herself back more and had a bit more pride.

The ending was hasty and I have to say I'm not convinced that he'd have remained faithful to her in the long run.

I didn't like the H and h much and there wasn't much of a romance and this book was a disappointment. The price was high too!

Format: Paperback
Overall Rating: 4.50 // Action: 3 / Emotion: 3.5 / Romance: 4 / Sensuous: 2.5 / Suspense: 4.5 // Historical Flavor: 3.5 / Laughter: 5½ / Tears: 1

Would recommend Suzanne Robinson's book, "Lady Hellfire," as a fun, entertaining, intriguing Historical Romance. Robinson composed a well-written story that drew readers deeply into lives of the characters.

Robinson created Alexis, a hunky, gorgeous, hero that draws women like bears to honey. She placed on his wide shoulders {1} a mother who blamed him for the deaths of his father and sister (his memory of that incident foggy); {2} a loyal, but illegitimate best friend; {3} haunting memories from participating in the battle at Balaclava; and {4} the consequences of inviting his mistress to his mother's house party.

Alexis's life was complicated when the apparently immune-to-him heroine, Kate, entered his home. Kate is furious at being forced to learn to be a lady in her mother's home country of England. Rather than be a fluffy ornament (like her mother), Kate is a strong-willed, determined, competent businesswoman (handling the family's finances after her father's death).

Robinson stirs in {1} a bit of action (death rides, burning homes, unexpected accidents), {2} a lot of suspense, {3} a bit of laughter, {4} some clever dialogue, {4} a teary moment, {5} some interesting supporting characters; {6} moments of emotional vulnerability by both Alexis and Kate; and {7} adds undeniable attraction to bring romance to the story and add spice and sizzle to the lovemaking.

Wolf Bear Does Books presents a more in-depth review of "Lady Hellfire."
