The best book ever!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
The Lady and the Lion has the best illistations (in my opinion!)! When you look at the pictures, you think, Man, how does Laurel Long paint those pictures in oil paint and watercolor paper. I think that this book should have won the Caldecott Award, but instead, the book The man Who Walked Between the Towers won. I also think that, the ALA Caldecott book had good pictures, but I think that The Lady and the Lion should have won. This book is probably good for ages 7 and up. The reason 7 and up is because you have to be able to read it by yourself. Although, if you can't read it on your own, the pictures tell the story. If you like the two stories, Cinderella and The Beauty and the Beast, then this is the book for you, becuase it is a mix between those two stroies. I hope that you will find time to read this book!!

AN AMAZING BOOK FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS!!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
An amazing story about a lady and a lion falling in love. Everyone should have a chance to read this book. This is a story that is like Beauty And The Beast and Cinderella combined. This book is one of the best books I have ever read, because the pictures can tell the whole story if you didn't have the words. This is a good book to read alone because it is good to see the details in the pictures up close. This book should have won the Caldecott Medal for 2004, but it didn't.

Magical artwork,
By
This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
If you have any appreciation for the artwork of this genre of picture books, then you must buy this book. I have many picture books, and I thought Kraft was the best illustrator, until I saw this book. While Kraft's work is amazing and mysterious, the artwork done by Laurel Long completely blows my mind. I've never been in such awe looking at pages from a picture book. It amazes me how someone can produce this art. The detail all over the page is amazing. The whole set up with this rolling hills background to show many different things in in the distance is incredible. The story itself was interesting, but did not grab me as much as some fairy tales. But much as I love fairy tales, this is my most cherished fairy tale picture book because the artwork is the best. Don't get me wrong, I did like the story, just did not looove it. But no matter, because I am so glad I came acrossed this book due to the art, although I am glad to know the story too. Anyway, after reading this book, I looked up Laurel Long and have bought the other books she's illustrated, and she does not disappoint. Buy this book, and then buy the other two books I highly recommend by her, The Mightiest Heart and The Magic Nesting Doll, and enjoy!

A perfect, museum quality, body of original artwork,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
Brilliantly retold for a new generation of children by Laurel Long and Jacqueline K. Ogburn, The Lady & The Lion is an impressive and memorable children's picture book that beautifully illustrates the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale of the Lady and the Lion. Laurel Long's artwork is a perfect, museum quality, body of original artwork that is a perfect match for the fairytale storyline. To fulfill a desperate promise, a young girl must confront a seemingly terrible lion - yet the beast is actually a prince under an enchantress' spell, and becomes her husband. Yet she must undertake a quest of seven years that will test her courage to its limit to truly rescue him, in this emotional and appealing tale.

A visual treat, a magical story...not just for kids,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
I was roaming the children's section of the bookstore in search of some inspiring artwork/illustrations and my eye was drawn almost immediately to "The Lady & the Lion." The artwork is absolutely beautiful, and it's the first thing to pull you in. I would love to see more of Laurel Long's work in it's life-size. Other children's books she's illustrated include "The Mightiest Heart" and "The Magic Nesting Doll." The re-telling of the Brothers Grimm story doesn't disappoint either. Not as "dark" as many Grimm fables can be, this one is magical and hopeful as well. But the illustrations are the thing that will keep me re-reading this book: I'll be studying it in-depth for a quite a while, as I'm also an artist. I wish Laurel Long had a website where more of her works could be enjoyed.

Amazing Tale!,

This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
I read a huge pile of fairy tale books in one sitting, and this by far was the best of the lot. (It made me want to watch my copy of Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast) The tale is like Beauty and the Beast, Cupid and Psyche and Jim Henson's "True Prince" all rolled into one.The illustrations are AMAZING. The hero and heroine are strong and their love is even stronger, it was just a wonderful story to read and experience through the lovely artwork on the pages.

What an Excellent Book!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
The Lady and the Lion is an excellent book. There are so many small details that make it just right for any reader older than 7. You have to be able to read the book, but if you can't, the pictures tell the story. The Lady and the Lion's pictures tell exacly what is going on. They also tell the mood of the story. They are realistic drawings, and you can tell what is happening. It is a mixture of Beauty and the Beast and Cinderella. I think the Lady and the Lion should have won the Caldecott Medal. It is a truly excellent book. Everyone should be able to have the pleasure to read it.

An AWESOME, DETAILED book!!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
The Lady and The Lion is a book with pictures that tell their own story. When reading this book, you feel like you are in the story. It is a story that is a mixture of Cinderella and The Beauty and The Beast. I would recommend this book for ages 7 and up, because you have to be old enough to read the words, even though you can look at the pictures and see the story. This book should have won the Caldecott Medal instead of The Man Who Walked Between The Towers. This is a good book to read alone so that you can see the pictures clearly. This is an EXCELENT book and everyone should have a chance to read it.

Sumptuous beauty, so so story,
By
This review is from: The Lady and the Lion (Hardcover)
This book provides an original combination of the separate Beauty and the Beast and East of the Sun, West of the Moon tales. In this story, a lovely young girl marries a prince trapped, during the day, in the body of a lion. When an enchantment forces him to fly away from his beloved in the body of a dove, she sets out to find her lover once more. Initially, I was going to begin this review with a small rant. Despite the fact that the characters in this book wear clothing, and live in palaces, of Indian or Eastern design, the people themselves are white white white. Why? Couldn't we have Grimm-like tale containing something other than the standard Caucasian skin tone? So there we go. That's my only complaint. Onwards to my point. The illustrations in this book are a step above breathtaking. The pictures drawn by Laurel Long are so beautiful that every tiny centimeter is filled with the most delicate linework and livid colors imaginable. From the folds of the young lady's dresses to the iridescent clouds surrounding the moon at night this book is fabulously beautiful. The story itself isn't anything you haven't heard before. But even a mediocre story can be made vastly more interesting when the pictures are spectacular. |
