Book Description

May 1993
In this book, the author exposes sexism in the big locker room of sports and sport journalism. She tells what a female reporter 'sees' inside the locker room and what she learns travelling with the team -- and, how to become accepted as one of the guys without ever becoming one.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Sexism is alive and well in professional sports in America, but inroads are being made. Fornoff, a beat writer assigned to the Oakland Athletics from 1985 to 1991, gives moving testimony of sexist attitudes and actions that confront women sportswriters, both in and out of the locker room. Ballplayer Dave Kingman's gift to her of a live rat is but one example. The struggle for locker room access provides dramatic examples of the difficulty women have in breaking into the "old boy" network in sportswriting. However, this book covers much more than one issue. It offers an entertaining yet sobering description of the life and challenges of a female sportswriter, with insights into the Oakland Athletics and other professional teams. It is a valuable historical record of the achievements and disillusionments of women sportswriters. Recommended for most collections. For an interview with the author, see "Fornoff Exposes the Men in the Locker Room," p. 74.--Ed.

SUE FORNOFF DOES A REAL NICE JOB TELLING US ABOUT HER WRITING CAREER COVERING THE GIANTS AND A'S DURING THE 1980'S AND 90'S. SHE WAS ONE OF THE FIRST WOMEN WHO GAINED ACCESS TO THE MEN'S LOCKER ROOM WHEN IT WAS A BIG DEAL. HER MANY STORIES AND EXPERIENCES BRING A FEW LAUGHS AND WORRIES ABOUT SOME OF THE STRANGE AND MACHO MEN IN PRO SPORTS. DID SHE PEAK OR NOT? LET HER TELL THE STORY. THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT IS THE STORY OF A 4 AND 2 LEGGED RAT. SUE DOES A REAL GOOD JOB DESCRIBING THE DISCRIMINATION THAT WOMEN GOT IN THE MAN'S WORLD OF SPORTS FROM THE PLAYERS AND WRITERS. HER SENSE OF HUMOR AND DETERMINATION HELPED HER TO GAIN ACCESS AND GET HER STORY. RECOMMENDED FOR ALL WHO LIKE SPORTS.
