Book Description

August 1, 1998
& 80 b/w and 10 color illustrations & 6 x 9 . New information on relations between the sexes in medieval England & Excellent selection of contemporary illustrations, many rarely seen Although there have been many books on the nobility in medieval England, and on the lady within that, most have concentrated on the romantic ideal rather than reality. This new work focuses on the lady's role in medieval society, how she was perceived both by herself and by her male counterparts, and how she related to and participated within the prevailing male culture of gentility. The author also discusses the darker side of court life--rape, abduction, and murder--through his review of contemporary evidence of several dramatic cases. Peter Coss, professor of medieval history at the University of Cardiff, has published several books on the subject. He is a member of the council of the Royal Historical Society, and sits on the editorial board of Past and Present.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, yet still an excellent read!, April 22, 2002

This book is a remarkable piece of scholarship. Coss
never makes a claim that he can't give solid examples
for. It is extremely insightful in the 'real' life,
and looks at real women's lives, not just popular
lore. It's detailed nature can be slightly hard to
'get into', but if one keeps reading, it is yields
fascinating information and becomes immensely
engrossing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of the real institution of "ladyship", July 30, 2005
This excellent book is best read as a pair with his previous, equally good _The Knight in Medieval England_ (1996). A knight must have a lady, but while many books have been written about medieval women, few have focused on the knight's female counterpart in society. Again, emphasis is on the aristocracy, since that's where the records are, though Coss depends heavily on surviving letters and contemporary literature as well as household accounts, and he even employs such sources as monumental effigies and brasses. Both books are stimulating studies with many examples drawn from noble families of the period.
