Mary is a poor former governess, dumped by the hero's cad of a brother. She marries the brother Stephen after he impulsively proposes, and seems to just get swept along by events. She is supposed to be a fiesty Scottish girl, but she doesn't show enough back-bone through most of the book. The couple consummates their marriage and have a good sexual relationship, but don't connect on an emotional level most of the time. Two things annoyed me. One was that Mary kept thinking that Stephen was a smuggler at best, and a murderer at worst, but still had strong feelings for him. She didn't trust him and it was hard to see why she was attracted to him, besides sex. The other things was the rather hackneyed plot of the murdered first fiance, the dead dog, and other assorted dead bodies that were eventually explained, but not to my satisfaction. I felt that that Stephen was supposed to be upset about the death of his former fiance, but he didn't seem to be very adept at trying to find out who slit her throat. He was a Naval officer in the past, a hardened veteran, but he was pretty clueless most of the time at handling what was going on around him. I'm not a fan of gothic romances, particularly ones where ambitious and crazed people are killing off characters (and poor animals) right and left. I don't mind some mystery and danger in my romance novels, but I like a lot of romance, and a cozy feeling and this just didn't do it for me.
