I read the preview on Lady Pirate and it was just so funny that I had to order it from the bookstore at the first chance.

I read the preview on Lady Pirate and it was just so funny that I had to order it from the bookstore at the first chance.

The Heroine was great. I hate weak females, but she isn't weak. She gotta be brave to be a pirate. The Hero was great too. He was very understanding, intelligent, and he acts so cute. Like the heroine said, "He is so darn cute."

The story has lots of humor like when her "face" fell off. Not really her face, it was makeup. Anyway, it bounced off her chest and landed into the mean hostess of the soiree's wineglass.

The storyline is that in order to inherit her family lands, she has to marry a nobleman and be with child by her 25th birthday which is in 9 months. A funny part is that her crew is always voting on what she should do for her own good. They voted that she so marry and enter society in order to do so. She met Lord Thurborne but doesn't want to marry him because he would be too independent for her to walk all over. Her men voted that she should marry him because they're perfect together. They drugged the two of them and sailed out to sea with them two aboard. Lots more happen but I shouldn't reveal it and ruin your fun.

This book was so good, I finished it in two days. I hope you'll like it too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lady Pirate is a "MUST READ!!", July 19, 2001

Lynsay Sands is a brilliant author that does it again!! This book is a well written historical romance, has strong characters, a great story line and I found it very entertaining. Lady Pirate has all the components of a great book... humor, intrigue, romance, and a dash of sex. What more could you want???

The "leading lady", Valoree and her motley pirate crew are hilarious trying to be land-rats in an attempt to find her a husband.

I am an avid historical romance reader, and have throughly enjoyed all of Lynsay Sands' books, and this one did not let me down. It is a book that was hard to put down, and easy to read again!

I highly recommend this book to all fellow historical romance readers!!

I decided to read this book after I saw it recommended on both the discussion forum and in some listmanias as a funny romance. Unfortunaltely I was disappointed and the humor fell flat with me. I understand what was supposed to be funny: pirates dressed in pink livery, allergic reactions to makeup, pirates trying to get an entrance into ton society and sorries... um soirees, and a lady who acted anything but like a lady. Although the set up was there for some really funny scenarios, somehow the execution fell flat with me.

The author also failed to provide very much physical description for the hero or heroine. The heroine is described as having red hair, the hero dark hair. No eye color to my recollection. Character description was very limited in details. I always like when the H/H consider what physically attracts them to the other. There wasn't much of that here. I also did not ever feel like I got "to know" the characters, or their motivations, therefore I never did get to the point of really liking the characters that much.

There were several subplots that were rapped up very quickly at the end of the book, and there was no feeling of a main plot.

The heroine's brother was killed, and she had replaced him as Captain in order to seek vengance, and restore the stolen wealth they needed in order to refurbish their run down estate. Everyone thinks they are a ghost crew of her dead brother. After collecting enough wealth they return to find that she must marry nobility and produce an heir to inherit the land where they wish to retire from the sea. The hero has the same solicitor and codicile to his will. He was also the kings assessor, and the only man to know her brothers identity, but he doesn't really seem to put everything together that the sister and her strange servants are the ghost pirate crew. He even knows she is the sister of the missing pirate, but he wants to watch her so maybe he can learn who is pretending to be the missing pirate. He is supposed to be investigating the identity of the pirate because the king has not gotten his portion of the booty since the brother died. The hero just seemed very weak natured and unintelligent to me. The heroine was made to look strong and capable at his expense.

This book seemed to want to go down one story line only to stop and pick up on another story line and go a different direction. I think it would have been much better had it picked one story line and stuck with it and followed it more thouroghly until the end. There was also a very abrupt ending, as though it just stopped in the middle of a chapter. The ending did not truly feel like everything had been resolved. What about her "aunt" Meg. I just knew she would end up with one of the pirates, but which one? There were other unresolved issues as well.

Valoree has been posing as Valerian for 10 years, fooling all the crew on her brother's privateer vessel, and being a regular scourge of the sea. Then her crew decides to retire, and they all want little cottages in the country, and they take a vote. They decide Valoree must return to London to claim her family's estate. When the estate lawyer tells her she must marry and have an heir in order to inherit, Valoree is ready to hop back on the ship and sail away. But her crew once again out-maneuvers her. They have another vote. They decide that she should marry, and they even choose her husband. She is horrified by their choice, because Daniel is exactly the opposite of what she thinks she wants.

Lady Pirate is such a fun read. All those big scary pirates in pink livery, trying to get Valoree dressed up and invited to soirees. As their drastic measures get increasingly drastic, things get very hot between Valoree and Daniel. Their wedding night was the funniest thing I've read in a long time. I don't want to give it away, but let's just say there was some light bondage involved.

I have always liked Lynsay Sands books. This one and "The Deed" are my two favorites. We romance readers spend so much time sifting through pebbles and hunting for gems. This one was a gem for me!

2.0 out of 5 stars I expected a lot more!, March 2, 2005

This review is from: Lady Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
Maybe I was expecting too much, but I purchased this book after reading all these wonderful reviews, and a hundred pages into it I had only smiled twice and not laughed even once. It was such a let down! The heroine Valoree kept snapping at her servants to keep up appearances (dressing and acting like proper servants) when she didn't make any effort on HER part to be a lady; in fact, she used all her efforts to rebel. Now is this this fair? It seems a bit hypocritical to me and did not raise my respect for the heroine.
The "prostitute" aunt Meg turns out not to be a prostitute at all nor a drunk (and so much more humor could have been brought in if she had really acted like a drunken prostitute, but as it is the character brought little or no humor to the story). Additionally, her totally unbelievable past painted her as a blindly trusting, mindless idiot who does not fight for anything she wants, so I had no respect for her either. After all she'd been through and all she'd survived, you'd think she'd be a little stronger, but it's as if her mental growth stagnated at 16 years old. No development at all.
Moreover, in the beginning Valoree is driven by revenge against the Spaniard who killed her brother, and when he is finally brought into the story in person (in the last chapter, after the main plot has been played out, as if Ms. Sands just threw it in to close off that loose end), HER HUSBAND kills him! Valoree simply stares at her brother's murderer in shock, as if unable to make the connection quick enough (and her intelligence is praised several times during the course of the book) or react quick enough (and this is a woman who has lived five years of her life as a pirate, seeking revenge and in daily risk of her life???). Perhaps we are suppose to assume she has become a true gentlewoman and reacts as a lady should, that is, simply freezing up and waiting for a man to act. If you like this kind of character regression, then by all means, this is the book for you.
The entire story was just one disappointment after the other, and only one chuckle out of the whole five wasted hours of my life. I am only writing this review in hopes of preventing others from making the same mistake. Perhaps the other people who read this book are diehard fans of Lynsay Sands and are looking at the book through rose-colored glasses, but as a totally objective reader I cannot recommend this book to anyone for the plot, the characters or the humor. They are all, in my opinion (which obviously is not the common one), less than mediocre.

5.0 out of 5 stars very steamy, indeed!, January 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Lady Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
well, lynsay sands seems to be getting better and better. i'veread most of her books and each one is better than the next. the bestpart of this book was that the heroine was a strong, brave, andintelligent character. and the hero... well, they really don't makemen like him, do they? he was a great counterpart to the heroine.also strong, brave, and intelligent, but flawed enough to make him aperfert romantic hero. the story was fast-paced and exciting. thechemistry and love scenes between hero and heroine were steamy, romantic, and frequent enough to keep my interest. i love it when thehero and heroine can't keep their hands off each other. what makesthis one really good was that the heroine was very natural in hersexuality and not coy and stupid about it. the secondary characterswere also lively and enhanced the story/romance without becoming"clutter." but, what really makes this a five star romanceinstead of three or four is the humor! ms. sands writes just enoughfunny and witty dialogue/scenes to keep the story interesting andlively. i am not a fan of hand-wringing/maudlin stories, especiallywhen that is all they rely on to keep the story going. i cannot waitfor the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Lady buckles swashes, March 6, 2003
This review is from: Lady Pirate (Mass Market Paperback)
I got this book from a friend of mine who totally loves it, so I figured I'd read it to see if I like... Usually I'm not a heavy romance reader, but stick with fiction and thrillers. But boy am I glad I read this one!!!
It's hysterical! I don't know how many times I laughed out loud reading this book nor how many thought of me as nuts when I did so at home, on the bus... I simply had to take it everywhere with me, only to find out what would happen next.

You have a 24 years old woman, Valoree, born a lady, who has been dressing up as a boy and managed to fool her crew as the captain of a pirate ship, mainly to get revenge for her brother's death. When she goes to claim her heir, Ainsley Castle, with a drunken as her aunt and the pirates as servent and dressed up as a lady herself, she's told that in order to inherit she needs to be married to a nobleman and with child before turning 25. With little time to solve the task, her crew decides to help her find a man to marry. But Valoree is one stubborn lady...

It's always something happening to make you laugh, and at the same time curious about what will happen next. Once I'd finished this one, I had to start on another one of hers, which I also loved. Hopefully I'll get to read yet another one soon!!
I highly recommend this one to anyone looking for a good book. Lynsay is a brilliant writer!!

Usually I can't put Lyndsay Sands books down, but I don't have that problem with this one. I'm definitely not saying that the book is bad. It's very good. It's just not up to Lyndsay Sands usual work. Even so, I highly recommend this for a fun read!

My first book by L. Sands and I loved it! I didn't want to put it down. The characters were great. This story is written with humor, sex, excitement and some danger. It is very easy to read. I was hooked when I had my first laugh on about the second page. I highly recommend this story. If you like pirate stories you need to read this one. I will read more of her books.
