5.0 out of 5 stars There is more to DeBurgh than a Lady in Red!
All of Chris de Burgh's songs really touch my heart and soul. This album shows that there is more to the artist than a Lady in Red! It highlights the story telling and rocker abilities of the artist as well as is talent for writing beautiful love songs. For those who already have most of these songs, it's worthwhile getting just for the track "There's A New Star...

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointed
Being a long time Chris De Burgh fan, it's a little disappointing to see less of the great old story songs on here and more of the newer romantic ones. While I do enjoy the newer as well as the old, I don't think that they did a good job of showing just how much this singer has evolved over time. His family really changed his music, and it shows. I would like to have...

For those who already have most of these songs, it's worthwhile getting just for the track "There's A New Star Up In Heaven Tonight". The song is a wonderful tribute to Lady Diana and is not available on any other CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Review From an older fan, August 13, 2001

This review is from: Lady in Red: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
Back in 1975 I stumbled across a record entitled "The Spanish Train and Other Stories" and was hooked. Luckily my parents didn't take exception to the lyrics of "The Spanish Train", "A Spaceman Came Travelling", or "Another Poor Boy". Seaking out his music I was able to track down his early record, and I continued to buy them as they were released.

Luckily I was around when the big record to CD switch over happened - when recording companies released their back catalogs on CDs - and was able to duplicate my collected on CDs. Since then I've picked up all his CDs as they've been released.

What can I say about this? Well, I'd heard almost all the music on it before I bought it. The Princess Di song was new, and worth the price of the CD. Of the songs included, well, I have weakeness for some of his older songs (not here) so these wouldn't be the ones I'd pick for a best of album, but I can't really disagree with the ones picked here. It covers only one of his albums from the 70s, skips much of the 80s, and has some of his more recent work. If you enjoyed "The Lady in Red" you'll like most of the songs heres, and "The Spanish Train" represents the style of the songs not included.

What can I say about either the songs or the artist that hasn't been said? Both are excellence. Chris de Burgh is in a class by himself

4.0 out of 5 stars What's Diana got to do with it?, February 6, 2006

I don't listen to Chris' music as much as I used to before but I know all the songs from this album. And I even own a cd with Lady In Red from 1995 and it is a newer recording of the song. Lady Di died in 1997 so Chris De Burgh couldn't have written the song after her death. Instead, it was Elton John who changed the lyrics of "Candle in the wind" (previously written for Marylin Monroe) for Lady Diana and performed the song at her funeral promising to never perform it pubically again.

Back to the review: Chris is an entertainer and yes, you may hate Lady In Red for being played over and over again but is it the artist's fault that he wrote a song that people want to listen to? I enjoy his music! Not everything has to be high-brow, sometimes we need to listen to love songs. Besides, there are some very good and intelligent songs by De Burgh, such as "Patricia The Stripper" or "Spanish Train" from the LP "Spanish Train". Spanish train is also on this album. I must admit that I don't enjoy his newer songs as much as I do the older ones and that's why the album gets 4 instead of 5 stars.

i don't have the album, but i have all the song's on it. And i would recoommend it to those who do not know the genuis that is chris de burgh. His true magic is found in his ability to transform words to pictures, and his voice is in a class apart, smooth tender and sweet. For someone to say that he's music is tuneless is outrageous. If you like tracy chapman's style of music, you will like chris, if you like rock, you will like chris and if you love ballads you can not help but admire his tunes. I have all of his albums, and each one is special in it's style. The lyrics are always brilliant and the music is almost always great. (some do not apeal to me, but not many). The lady in red doses not make the true chris de burgh as most poeple who don't know him think, it's rather tunes like spanish train and revolution that make him the artist he is. I did not give it five stars because i feel it has only a few of Chris de Burgh's great work, some fantastic song's have been leftout (but that's normal when you have about 17 album's to choose from) hope i have been of help to you buyers, if you what to have more info on chris , contact me!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lady in Red: The Very Best of Chris de Burgh, October 30, 2006

1. "This is your Paradise" - This is a number 1 pick as the "Our Song" for a couple. The lyrics are clear and concise and have all the emotion one wants to convey to your mate. The music is well suited to the lyrics and leaves a "cannot forget the melody" as the take away from listening.
2. "Lady in Red" - My reason for purchasing the cd. Again, the lyrics and melody make this an all time favorite dance and sing along tune. So much emotion is conveyed and is truly a classic.
3. "Borderline" - With the war in Iraq, this is a "now" tune even though written years ago. The sentiment is so emotionally filling .. one cannot get away from the haunting melody. Comment: Seems there are several tunes on this cd that mirror the melody of "Borderline". A bit repetitious but nonetheless haunting.

I just received my copy of this incredible CD. A great compilation of Chris greatest hits such as "Dont pay the ferryman" or "The lady in red" but also some terrific songs not known by a great public in the US and Canada. Indispensable for his fans - not only because of the previously unpublished tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales. People who did not know him before should buy this album to discover the magic of CDEB. Hope for you folks over there that he will be with you live on stage soon !

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Lyrics....Great Sound....Great Songwriter, August 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Lady in Red: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
As a fan of Chris De Burgh for over 10 years, I can honestly say that his albums are some of the best I've ever listen to.

If you honestly want to "feel" inspiration as you listen to a song, listen to Chris. Tunes such as "The Lady in Red" "Fatal Hesitation" are classics that will always be around.

After losing my tapes that I had over 7 years ago, I went online to purchase the CD's recently because I only had a few singles for so long and I'm glad I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chris - One of Ireland's Great Singers, April 23, 2000
This review is from: Lady in Red: The Very Best of (Audio CD)
I can't believe a reviewer would say that Chris is tuneless! He is fantastic and this Album features some of the best songs he has released. I absolutely adore 'Don't Pay the Ferryman' and 'A Spaceman Came Travelling'. This is a great album to have as it captures so many of his best songs. Don't be put off by one bad review, this man is fantastic. Of course I am a little partial being Irish myself!
