Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This early '50s Disney classic had it all: class confrontation (purebred meets mutt), memorable songs (by Sonny Burke and Peggy Lee), and an unusually truthful view of household creatures (dogs are good, cats are bad). "The Siamese Cat Song" shimmers with the mock Orientalism of classic Exotica--enhanced by Lee's double-tracked evocation of barely domesticated evil. Producer Randy Thornton deserves credit for piecing together Oliver Wallace's myriad cues into a reasonably cohesive musical work, but the handful of Peggy Lee tracks are the real treasure. Whether fronting a choir of howling dogs on "He's a Tramp" or employing that oddly dispassionate "Is That All There Is" voice on "What Is a Baby," it's Lee who, a half century later, still commands the spotlight. --Bill Forman

5.0 out of 5 stars By far one of the best classic Disney soundtracks, January 15, 2002
This review is from: Lady and the Tramp (Audio CD)
This was the first classic Disney soundtrack I purchased and it is really able to hold its own against all the other soundtracks in this series. The score takes on a much more lightly mature tone than that of the other scores (except for maybe Bambi, which still is a bit more heavy handed.) The music very much reflects the laid back yet intent way the story is styled in the actual film. There is a lot of score to listen to, but it all flows together and each piece still retains its own individuality. And, as always, "He's A Tramp" is just as irresistable as it was when the film first premiered over 40 years ago. A lush yet down to earth soundtrack make this a vital and highly enjoyable addition to any Disney music collection!

4.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for any Disney or soundtrack collecter, March 31, 2011

This review is from: Lady and the Tramp (Audio CD)
Lady and the Tramp is one of the classics, in both movie and song, and this soundtrack does not disappoint. The majority of it is as lighthearted and soft as movie, highlighted with the occasional vocals from the film in order of original appearance. We hear Lady's quizzical tone in 'What is a Baby?' followed by the mischievous 'Siamese Cat Song' and eventually the ever-infamous 'He's a Tramp.' The music on this CD is as old-timesy as the year it came out, truly a beautiful collection of instruments. With nearly an hour of song, this is one of the better soundtracks I've run across (many these days seem to be hardly 30 minutes). It's a fact, they just don't make 'em like this anymore.

The only reason I gave this little gem 4 stars instead of 5 was because it was a little jarring to hear that one song, 'Home Sweet Home' by The Melo Men. Even in the movie I disliked that part, perhaps it is because the images of crying, lonely puppies and dogs fill my head whenever I hear it - but more likely I think it's because the sound of soulful whining/barking/howling grinds on my nerves.
