This review is from: The Lady and the Tycoon: The Best of Letters Between Rose Wilder Lane and Jasper Crane (Hardcover)
I came to love the spirit of Rose Wilder Lane after reading this book. She was a compassonate, talented, woman with far reaching insight. And oh, that mind. She was a deep thinker. She of course helped found the libertarian movement in the 1940's. I was totally enthralled by the discussions in the letters from the 1940's and 50's. They were debating and confronting the same political/philosophical problems/issues as we are today. The battle is between the same principles. I got a fantastic historical perspective from reading this book. I appreciate what Rose Lane had to go through when there were far less libertarians than there is today. She did some tough work. Also, it was a joy to get to know her in the intimate way that personal letters reveal about a persons heart. Mr.Crane seemed to be more of a traditional republican conservative and so I got to see the libertarian dynamic versus republican conservative. Mr. Crane was a traditional Christian and Rose Lane seemed to be more of Deist, so it was fun to see that dynamic played out as well. I believe it helped that I read a book about the history of the Libertarian movement before reading this book (Radicals for Capitalism). A lot of the people mentioned in the letters were thus familiar to me. In conclusion I really enjoyed reading this book and have great admiration not only for Rose Lane's politics, but for her as a human being. And oh that mind, what a mind!
