Book Description

Rachel Alexander & Dash Mysteries August 30, 2005

From former detective turned noted author and dog trainer, Carol Lea Benjamin, comes the fourth book in the critically-lauded Rachel Alexander mystery series, with a sharp new package--and for the first time in mass market!

Dash, Rachel Alexander's pit bull terrier, has come to be known as half a sleuthing team. But when not called upon to solve crimes he has another very important job: that of a therapy dog, working with people who are developmentally challenged.

Lady, a mop-coated puli, was the therapy dog at Harbor View, a Greenwich Village home for "throw away" people. But now lady has vanished...and the owner of the home has been killed in a bizarre and mysterious hit-and-run accident. Rachel and Dash are the perfect duo to tackle this mystery: she can find the answers and Dash can bring a sense of calm and order to the residents.

As the pieces start coming together, Rachel and Dash not only expose an ugly plot, but also help some innocent victims find justice in a world that too often ignores them.

5.0 out of 5 stars always excellent, September 30, 2008
This review is from: Lady Vanishes: A Rachel Alexander Mystery (Rachel Alexander & Dash Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
The woman has never written anything that disappoints. She is a very talented and deep writer, and does not really fit the cozy genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars Therapy, December 22, 2007

(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Lady Vanishes: A Rachel Alexander Mystery (Rachel Alexander & Dash Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
It is promising when the dog's name is Dashiell. His owner is Rachel Alexander, the PI of the story. In New York everyone rushes. Time is of the essence, always. The Lady of the title is a Puli. Her disappearance and the inexplicable death of the benefactor of the care facility for autistic individuals, Harbor View, are the problems Rachel is to address after being hired by Venus White, a Harbor View worker, to make inquiries.

It seems that Lady was the resident therapy dog, but Dashiell, a pit bull, has qualities useful as a substitute. Venus understands that Dashiell will serve as a point of entry for Rachel to get to know the residents at Harbor View. Venus feels that she is in some sort of danger.

Harry Dietrich, the dead man, and Venus had developed a closer relationship via an anonymous setting--online. The building for the group home had been a seamen's hotel and sound tended to carry all through it. The layout of the facility served to assist Rachel as she worked to learn just exactly what had been going on at Harbor View. Also relevant to the solution of Lady's absence and Harry's death was a determination by Rachel of the roles of the workers and helpers at Harbor View, both historically and prospectively.

On a variety of levels this story is a clever piece of work.

I love the whole series by Benjamin. Great writing makes the story flow well - no stumbling over words or grammar to pull you away from an engrossing story line. Then, of course, both Rachel and Dash are solid, interesting characters. I appreciate the fact that there is enough personality development to make the protagonists, and other characters, really interesting.
