Book Description

October 5, 2006
This is a story about Lady Anne Neville as well as her husband, Richard Duke of Gloucester later Richard III. It controversially portrays Anne as a strong woman, on the basis that in the medieval period the upper class women were expected to run all their husband's households, whether great castles or a manor house. We only have the Tudor history that says she and Edward were weak and history is written by the victors. I have tried to follow history but have had to use my imagination as little is known about Anne, so any mistakes are mine for which I apologise. We do not know much about Anne, so I have told her story based on how women in the Middle Ages are thought to have behaved. Any other characters are fictitious, apart from Geoffrey Richardson & Domus. My main source book on the Nevilles was The Lordly Ones by G. Richardson. My partner at the time encouraged me and drew the pictures. Though what happened to us and me or P. Womack, is true.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing, June 30, 2007
This review is from: Lady in Waiting (Paperback)
In a word, I found this book confusing.

I began reading Eunice Wormald's 'Lady in Waiting' with great hope--finally a book about Anne Neville that assured to show her as a strong and capable lady of the manor, loving mother, and wife and adviser to her husband, Richard III. Although what I read did not necessarily contradict that assurance, it was so confusing that I could not ascertain if the promise had been fulfilled.

My two major issues were: 1) every character was presented in the first person with no indication as to whose voice was speaking in the scene; and 2) I could not tell when the scene was taking place chronologically because not only did the story jump from the present to the fifteenth century, but it also shifted back and forth when in the fifteenth century. I found myself going back over scenes I had read and skipping ahead in order to dope out the where, when and who.

The many errors in grammar and punctuation, in addition to typos led me to believe this book might be close to if not actually a first draft.

It is with great reluctance that I gave this book a poor rating and review because despite the faults, there was that occasional moving and insightful passage. I honestly feel this book could have been much more.
