I stumbled upon this cd by listening to Spinner, a free internet music service that features streaming audio channels. I had tuned into Spinner's Bossa Nova channel hoping to find a song by Joao Bosco. When the song, The Lady Wants To Know came on, my ears perked up. I thought to myself whoever this lady is I must find if there's a cd by her to hear more. Thank goodness! A cd existed.
I have played this cd over and over. I never tire of it.
My favorites are Triste, You Do Something To Me, Each and Everyone, Something About Him, Baubles, Bangles, and Beads. Since I never get enough of Bossa this cd was in order. Her version of Sabor A Mi is a hard act to follow. I've heard other versions, namely, Luis Miguel who I love. But Miguel could take some notes from Ms Fygi.
This lady just wants to know if Fygi will do more Bossa Nova in the future.

You can't go wrong with any Laura Fygi CD, but this is one of her best, featuring Brazilian and Latin songs, bossa nova rhythms, and a lilting, sensual atmosphere. Excellent!

"Who is this woman?" was my first reaction when I first heard Laura Fygi's sultry warm voice. And this album is just too indescribable for my words. Essentially, it is impeccable! I'm so glad I stumbled onto Ms. Fygi's material while shopping for the new Diana Krall CD. Let me break it down:

Laura Fygi's "The Lady Wants to Know" includes some of the most romantic and endearing renditions of classic titles like "Corcovado," "Dindi," "Triste," "Something About Him," "How Insensitive (Insensatez)," and "Sabor a mi." All her interpretations are a magnificent discovery among the annals of female jazz vocalists. Her vocal range is consistent and very distinguished, as she demonstrates in "Dindi" and "Triste" as well as other tunes. The only whimsical track on here is "Oh Telephone" where she displays a playful turn with lyrics. And the album's title track is also a wonderful cover, her voice flowing with heartfelt soul. Her Spanish in "Sabor a mi" is free of any accent intonations, and beautiful.

The orchestral backdrop is exceptionally top-notch and flawless. Accompanied predominantly by strings, The London Studio Orchestra is beautifully conducted by Jurre Haanstra, and each note follows Laura's cooing voice with such sweet delight. Romantic saxophones and a symbiotic duet with unique-voice Michael Franks (in "Tell Me All About It") adds to the fine continuity of this album. All the songs on here are reminiscent of a blissful, romantic evening by a cozy fire or walk on a sunset beach.

Without a doubt, Laura Fygi is inarguably one of the most underrated vocalists I have ever heard. While pop "music" artists with no vocal talent or trite musical stylings continue receiving unwarranted acclaim, truly blessed talents like Laura Fygi will only continue to shine and grow without the blemish of succumbing to recording monotonous music. "The Lady Wants to Know" is an exquisite and overlooked vocal album. By all means, if you endear yourself to Ella, Diana Krall, Dinah Washington, or Dinah Shore, you will truly love the elegance and poignancy of this Laura Fygi set. Superb!
