What A Wonderful Find,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Lady Wants to Know (Audio CD)
I stumbled upon this cd by listening to Spinner, a free internet music service that features streaming audio channels. I had tuned into Spinner's Bossa Nova channel hoping to find a song by Joao Bosco. When the song, The Lady Wants To Know came on, my ears perked up. I thought to myself whoever this lady is I must find if there's a cd by her to hear more. Thank goodness! A cd existed.I have played this cd over and over. I never tire of it. My favorites are Triste, You Do Something To Me, Each and Everyone, Something About Him, Baubles, Bangles, and Beads. Since I never get enough of Bossa this cd was in order. Her version of Sabor A Mi is a hard act to follow. I've heard other versions, namely, Luis Miguel who I love. But Miguel could take some notes from Ms Fygi. This lady just wants to know if Fygi will do more Bossa Nova in the future.

You can't go wrong with any Laura Fygi CD, but this is one of her best, featuring Brazilian and Latin songs, bossa nova rhythms, and a lilting, sensual atmosphere. Excellent!

A Golden Gem!,

"Who is this woman?" was my first reaction when I first heard Laura Fygi's sultry warm voice. And this album is just too indescribable for my words. Essentially, it is impeccable! I'm so glad I stumbled onto Ms. Fygi's material while shopping for the new Diana Krall CD. Let me break it down:Laura Fygi's "The Lady Wants to Know" includes some of the most romantic and endearing renditions of classic titles like "Corcovado," "Dindi," "Triste," "Something About Him," "How Insensitive (Insensatez)," and "Sabor a mi." All her interpretations are a magnificent discovery among the annals of female jazz vocalists. Her vocal range is consistent and very distinguished, as she demonstrates in "Dindi" and "Triste" as well as other tunes. The only whimsical track on here is "Oh Telephone" where she displays a playful turn with lyrics. And the album's title track is also a wonderful cover, her voice flowing with heartfelt soul. Her Spanish in "Sabor a mi" is free of any accent intonations, and beautiful. The orchestral backdrop is exceptionally top-notch and flawless. Accompanied predominantly by strings, The London Studio Orchestra is beautifully conducted by Jurre Haanstra, and each note follows Laura's cooing voice with such sweet delight. Romantic saxophones and a symbiotic duet with unique-voice Michael Franks (in "Tell Me All About It") adds to the fine continuity of this album. All the songs on here are reminiscent of a blissful, romantic evening by a cozy fire or walk on a sunset beach. Without a doubt, Laura Fygi is inarguably one of the most underrated vocalists I have ever heard. While pop "music" artists with no vocal talent or trite musical stylings continue receiving unwarranted acclaim, truly blessed talents like Laura Fygi will only continue to shine and grow without the blemish of succumbing to recording monotonous music. "The Lady Wants to Know" is an exquisite and overlooked vocal album. By all means, if you endear yourself to Ella, Diana Krall, Dinah Washington, or Dinah Shore, you will truly love the elegance and poignancy of this Laura Fygi set. Superb!

Another simply stunning piece of work,
This review is from: The Lady Wants to Know (Audio CD)
Laura Fygi has done it again: A drop-dead gorgeous compilation of great songs, once again beautifully arranged and sung to masterfully. She's the best there is for "dreamy" music and it could be no different since she herself claims to be a Tom Jobim fan. She's in a class of her own.

I love music, particularly smooth jazz. I really enjoy Michael Franks. I must say, however, that Laura Fygi's rendition of the Lady wants to know is terrific and as good as Franks. In fact, Laura's whole CD is fantastic. Where has she been all of my life? If you enjoy music with the soft sounds of an expert singer, buy all of Fygi's CD's (Netherlands' answer to Julie London)...her voice and sense of rhythm, moods and personality will melt your troubles away and spawn romantic feelings. She is a "Keeper" and I feel sorry for those that have not as yet heard her sing.

A natural star,

Ms Fygi has a sweet, innocent voice, not quite what you might expect from the glamorous creature depicted on the cover. I like the naturalness of her singing, especially in Spanish. Her guests Michael Franks, Clark Terry and Toots Thielemanns contribute notably to this album - Toots' solo on 'It Might as Well be Spring' is terrific.

Incredibly Smooth Vocalist,

I came across this recording in Panama in 1997 from a fellow selling CD's door-to-door. I enjoy smooth jazz and this one caught my eye - and ear. What sound!! Ms. Fygi's voice is silky smooth and flawless, be it in English, Spanish or Portuguese. The London Studio Orchestra's musical accompaniment is absolutely top notch, complementing Ms. Fygi's singing perfectly. The CD I have must be an import, it has 16 tracks compared to 13 listed in Amazon's version, and tracks are in different order. One not listed on Amazon's version but on my copy is a playful Brazilian tune, "Disse Alguem". My favorite on the album is "Each and Everyone", an upbeat bossa nova masterpiece. Why this CD hasn't gotten more airplay is beyond me. XM radio has given many artists exposure they would otherwise not obtain through commercial outlets. I agree with fellow reviewers, this recording is perfect for a quiet evening in front of the fire. Thank you, Ms. Fygi, for a winner.

Wow! Laura, where have you been all my life?,

This lady can put a song across like few I've know. Luscious voice, incredible musical arrangements, Laura surrounds herself among what seem to be some of the best musicians I've heard in a long time. Antonio Carlos Jobim, and Michele Legrand could thank her for rendering the best interpretations of their music.Laura where are you? we need to see and hear you perform in the US....please! Had it not been for XM music, I would've been deprived of your soultreuss, seductive voice and talent. Her worst album is still better than 99% of the music published in the US......I am in love!

Romantic and Fun!,
This review is from: The Lady Wants to Know (Audio CD)
I heard 'Corcovado' on the car radio one afternoon and I had to have this CD, you do too! Fygi's vocals have a lovely soft texture, and her sultry range fixes on the heart of the emotion. The musicians are all first-rate! Deep and sensitive renditions of 'torch songs', and some fun interpretations of show tunes make this a fun and romantic collection. Michael Franks joins her for a sexy duet on 'Tell Me All About It'.
