More About the Author

February 24, 2012

Until February 27th my book A Love for All Seasons is free on Kindle. If you haven't already tried this one, now's your chance to enjoy it for free. As for me it's back to shoveling horse manure into the new garden area. A writer's life is so glamorous!

Once again, THANK YOU ALL for enjoying my Graistan Chronicles and giving me a thrilling ride on the Amazon Best Seller List. Don't forget you can get my novella An Impetuous Season as a free Kindle download on my site: Denisedomning.com. Also I now have both of my Lady books available, Lady in Waiting and Lady in White, as well as two of my Warrior series books available as Kindles: The Warrior's Wife and The Warrior's Maiden ($.99).

As you can imagine, after writing eleven historical romances, the last thing I thought I'd be doing was co-writing someone's memoir, especially someone whose path would never have crossed mine except for the writing project.

It's all the fault of my homeopath's wife, Barbara Ketover. At almost every visit Barbara, who knew very well I wrote fiction, would insist I had to meet this woman and write her book. She finally wore me down and Monica Sarli and I connected. The result? The Men Wars, Volume One, Men-ipulation (now available as a Kindle and a paperback).

Thank heavens it only took me five years to research Monica's life as compared to the twelve years I spent studying the Twelfth Century before completing my first novel.

As far as my own books go, my first Medieval novel, Winter's Heat, received the Romantic Times award for Best First Historical Novel of 1994. That led me into a series of books that take place in the Twelfth century, the time of Robin Hood and Richard the Lionheart. In them, I follow the lives of the five FitzHenry brothers. After Winter's Heat came Summer's Storm, then Spring's Fury. That book was nominated by RT for Best Medieval of 1995 and its sequel Autumn's Flame was nominated for the same award for 1996. Kristin Ramsdall of the Library Journal lists the final book of the series, A Love For All Seasons on her recommended reading list, including it in the (American) Library Journal's 1997 annual publication "What Do I Read Next". Although all of these are out of print with their original publisher, they are now available through Kindle.

From there I thought I'd dabble a little with the Elizabethans. Publisher's Weekly liked Lady in Waiting, the first of these two books, calling it "well written, well researched, with an accurate portrayal of Elizabeth I". Lady in White, an Elizabethan ghost story, followed in October, 1999.

Once finished with the Elizabethans, I went back to the 13th Century for Avon Books and a pen name--it was the first time I didn't have to get married to change my name. I chose Hampton because I like Hampton Court Palace. The first book, The Warrior's Damsel (now titled The Warrior's Wife) came out in May, 2001, the second, My Lady's Temptation (now The Warrior's Maiden), in February, 2002, while the final book of the trilogy, The Warrior's Game, with its marvelous purple cover, appeared in January of 2003. The last Denise Hampton book appeared on Thanksgiving, 2003. Almost Perfect was my very first Regency Era romance and my last. It's just too modern a time period for me.

So what am I doing now? Well, I'm living out the book "Under the Tuscan Sun" only doing it in Sedona, Arizona instead of Tuscany and doing it Green. You see, I don't live with Ed Begley Jr. I live with the other Ed and he's much worse! Check out my blog about my experiences becoming a farmer's wife at denisedomning.com.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Historical Romance Set in an Unusual Time Period, May 5, 2000
By
This review is from: Lady in White: Lords of Midnight (Paperback)
LADY IN WHITE is a quick read set in Elizabethan England (picture SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, minus the depressing ending and spews of poetry). Lady Arabella Purfoy has been maneuvered into a marriage with a reclusive squire she's never met by the Virgin Queen Herself, only to find herself completely heels over head in love with the man's steward.

The book doesn't overplay either the relationship between Belle and the steward, nor the political intrigue that surrounded the Elizabethan court before the death of Mary, Queen of Scots.

While the book was enjoyable for a light read, and one is glad to see the hero and heroine together in the end, the novel doesn't pack any emotional punches, even at key moments in the story, and there are very few surprizes. Not a work of genius, but a good and satisfying work nonetheless.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend Lady in White, January 16, 2012
This review is from: Lady in White (Kindle Edition)
Denise Domning is a very gifted story teller. She has superbly captured the life and times that were the Elizabethan age. Her characters come to life on the page and make you feel that you have known them for years. From the page one you find yourself caring about what happens to them. Denise's ability to weave fact and fiction with a healthy dose of intrigue, will keep you reading, not wanting to put your e-reader down! Lady in White is set against the backdrop of the religious movement in Elizabethan England. The Church of England was the voice of religion and Elizabeth I was the head of the church. You will believe that you have actually met Elizabeth I and know what it was like to be a member of her court and have it your bounden duty to abide by her every whim and decision. I highly recommend Lady in White to all who what to read a touching romance while learning about history.

5.0 out of 5 stars a mature Elizabethan Romance......, March 27, 2008
This review is from: Lady in White: Lords of Midnight (Paperback)
I throughly enjoyed Lady In White. It was interesting to read of court intrigues, scandals and habits of Elizabethan nobility. I think the author accurately portrayed the time period as well as the characters dismay over the tangle they find themselves in because of relations machinations at court.

Arabella and Jamie were realistic lovers-who loved each other but knew they must not recognize their love as Arabella was being forced to marry Jamie's leige lord, Nick, who was in love with another as well. I enjoyed the fact that the characters were older-and behaved more maturely and honestly than some youngster with no life experiences.

The bedroom scenes are mild, and the romance itself is more intrinsic to the plot as well.

An unusual Historical Romance that I recommend for romance fans looking for something a bit different.

4.5 stars!
